Subject: removing posts from the google archives (especially for peter) From: morce…@rediff.com (les morceaux) Newsgroups: alt.support.trauma-ptsd hoy peter: >I’ve had some asshole forge me and I want to get rid of his >pathetic posts.

the instructions below will work if he used your real email address when he forged you. morceaux I’ll warn you in advance that because this post is long, the instructions may seem exceptionally complicated. They really are not. If you follow each directive one step at a time, by the time you’ve finished, you’ll be able to do it without any trouble at all a thousand times after that, probably without ever needing to refer to these instructions again. It is possible to remove your own posts from Google, assuming you have used a real email address in your posts. If you’ve tweaked your email addy with a spamblocker (something like your…@your.isp.nospam.com), there is no way to nuke those posts. It is not possible to remove other people’s posts (well, it is, but it’s really hard to do and if you can figure *that* out, you don’t need to bother reading these instructions), and since many people on usenet choose to post responses that include everything in the post they are responding to, including the headers, those posts are permanent. One way to get around that is to set up your newsreader with an anonymous ID. I have not used my legal name or my ISP email address on Usenet since 1997. I’m a slow learner. I had been online at that point for 8 years, and had a few thousand posts to remove from the archives. If you should choose to start posting with a pseudonym (and an anonymous or freebie email address), you’ll need to dig around in the preferences and/or config options in your newsreader in order to figure out how to do it. Since I don’t know what newsreader (usenet client) you use, I can’t help with those instructions. Now comes the pain-in-the-ass part. It is time-consuming and irritating to remove posts (especially if you have a lot) from the Google archives, but it is not nearly as difficult as it was to do a few years ago in the old Deja News archives. In order to do it, you’ll need to open two web browsers. Open the first one and go to: http://services.google.com:8882/urlconsole/controller When that page opens, it may complain that your browser isn’t set up for cookies. If it does that, just refresh the page and it will work fine (unless, of course, you have cookies disabled… if that’s the case, I don’t know what to tell you, but my guess is you won’t be able to nuke your posts). Set up an account there with the email address you’ve used to make usenet posts. Once you have followed all the instructions that come in your email, you will be able to nuke your posts. If you didn’t close your browser window (from here on out, I’ll be calling that window Browser Window One) while you were dealing with the email aspect, you’ll still be at: http://services.google.com:8882/urlconsole/controller And the top line of the page will say, "Remove your URL or Google Groups Post." If it doesn’t say that, you probably need to sign in. Now, open a second browser window (From now on, called Browser Window Two) and go to: http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search Change where it says "10 messages" to "100 messages" Change where it says "Sort by relevance" to "Sort by date" Put your posting email address (your…@your.isp.com) into the box where "Author" is required. Click on "Google Search" Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "repeat the search with the omitted results included" Now you can start nuking posts. In Browser Window One, Click on "Remove your usenet posts from Google Groups" Click on your first post in Browser Window Two. Highlight the address (in the address bar) of the post from Browser Window Two and copy it. Go to the Browser Window One and paste it into the box that says "Enter the full Google Groups URL of the post you would like removed" Click "Delete Post" Click "YES, delete this post" Click "submit" where it says "You may visit the options page to check the status of all your pending requests or submit another one" Click "Back" on your Browser Window Two, and go to your next post. Repeat until you feel you are done. Good luck. — Peter Lucas       Do not walk behind me, Brisbane                for I may lead you into danger. Geez, I never know what to do.  Some people yelled about ’snipping’ cause they couldn’t see ‘the context’, and then other people get upset when one doesn’t snip, so I’m usually at a loss of what to do.  When I first started posting, I top-posted and found that was a HUGE NO NO, so then I’d just scroll all the way down, careful to not change any context’s of anything anyone said, and tack my response down at the bottom. Just a reminder to those new to Usenet … when someone uses the subject as the first line in a post, that means that they don’t wish to have their posts saved for eternity on Google or whatever. Thus, when you respond to someone using "X-No-Archive: yes" it is rather nice to help them keep their privacy by not quoting their entire post when we respond, especially the headers. Even when someone uses an anonymous remailer like Asarian, folks do get ‘followed’ around the internet. :/ Smile and there will be something to smile about! Nancy

I don’t understand what you mean by this? sg

hoy stargazer, >>when someone uses the subject as the first line in a post, >>that means that they don’t wish to have their posts saved >>for eternity on Google or whatever. >>Thus, when you respond to someone using "X-No-Archive: >>yes" it is rather nice to help them keep their privacy by not >>quoting their entire post when we respond, especially the >>headers. >I don’t understand what you mean by this?

there’s a way to keep your posts from being archived in google. the way to do it is type the line: x-no-archive: yes at the very top of each post. and many newsreaders have  a space where that can be checked so it’s automatically there. when someone quotes the whole post, including the headers, it nullifies the no-archive command, because the quoted post gets archived in google and can be searched out by someone with a clue and some patience. it’s sometimes hard to see that a post is marked x-no-archive, so it’s really best if we snip the headers of all posts we respond to, and change the greet. most newsreaders, when you hit reply, start a post out with something like: In article <star.dot.bang.someth…@some.dot.webusenet.com>, you say… or "soandso" <some…@someemail.net> wrote in message

<news:some.long-ass.number@posting.google.com>… which shows exactly who wrote it and from where, even if they had set their own post not to be identified or archived. that’s one of the reasons people get irritable about people who don’t snip posts when they respond to them. i learned long ago that getting people to respect my x-no-archive command was hopeless. so i change my email addresses every few months, and every few weeks, i go and nuke all my posts through google. that doesn’t stop people from quoting me, but it makes me a lot harder to find. >>Even when someone uses an anonymous remailer like Asarian, >>folks do get ‘followed’ around the internet. :/

i’ve had this happen… been stalked from one newsgroup to another by assholes. in general, i’ve ignored it, but it irritates the shit out of me that some usenet stalkers are willing to disrupt *support* groups because they’re pissy with someone. i find that inexcusably rude. that’s the primary reason i use so many different nyms and emails in my usenet activity; to avoid having the support groups i belong to disrupted by someone who has decided they don’t like me, for whatever reason. morceaux — For a new email address, try http://recoverynhealing.zzn.com — She stared people down and appeared remorseless because the only choices she knew were predator or victim.                              –Shankar Vedantam — My mind is a bad neighborhood. Geez Peter, and you question my need for meds?  ;)  See, you understood Nancy’s post just fine, and this is my brain ‘unscrambled’.  You should see it when I’m not on meds.  I couldn’t even put this  many thoughts together without medication.  It’s like a whirlwind in there, no mans land. ;) sg – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> — > Peter Lucas Just because I want to be in charge > Brisbane and run things *my* way > Australia (which BTW, is the right way), > that doesn’t mean that I’m a > Control Freak……… OK?
