Therapy Question

Question:

I thought I was talking nonsense to my doc.  And she was able to pick on things that I did not know about myself or was never able to talk to about to anyone.  Sometimes it was like she was reading me but it was actually good.  If anything, she could explain in words what I was feeling.  OR… She opened up my mind in other directions so I could find other ways of thinking. Good Luck and don’t worry about a thing.  Just make sure you are comfortable with your therapist. JP – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello All, I have agreed to go talk to someone about my Panic and Anxiety. I am scared and dont know what to expect.  I feel they will read my mind.  I have so many things that constantly race through my mind where do I start. Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect. Thanks in advance. Lee

Response:

My guess is that they will simply start with asking you to explain the problem, your symptoms,  when they began, whether you can relate them to any life events etc., then they will probably take a medical/social history to get a better overall sense of you as a person.  It is absolutely nothing to worry about, and a step in the right direction.    Good luck, PETER

When I went in for the first time, I was so scared I stuttered (never have before or since). Here’s a run down of what it was like for me. Of course everyone’s experiences are not the same. I filled out the paperwork and all of that good stuff, then the Dr. came out and introduced himself. We went into his office, and he asked me questions about my general health, family health (dad, mom, etc.) and then of course if there were mental health issues in my family. (all of the nine children and my mom have panic/anxiety.) After that was over with, he asked what had brought me to his office, and sat back and listened. Asking a few questions periodically. I’ve been seeing him for the past three years, for anxiety/panic, ptsd, childhood abuse, etc. Regardless of this all-powerful persona, they are human, and have many issues of their own, and unless you get a really gifted one, they can’t read your mind! They are usually very empathetic and caring. Good luck! Hope this helps you some. www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/8472/index.html Hello All, I have agreed to go talk to someone about my Panic and Anxiety. No therapist can read your mind and that’s a promise. Just go and see what the therapist’s intention is. Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect.

No, because your information is very sparse. Generally speaking your best bet seems to be with a pdoc for meds and possibly a clinical psychologist for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).What kind of *someone* will you be talking to? *Talk therapy* like psycho-analysis has a poor track record with PAD. Please keep us posted. Thanks in advance. Lee

I will make one suggestion that helped me when I was going to different therapists/docs.  Sit down before you go and think about what it is you want to tell him/her.  Write it all down on a piece of paper.  This way you want leave and go , "Oh, I forgot to tell him about this or that." That happened to me numerous times. Good luck with you session and I’m glad you are seeking help. John L.

Don’t think of anything but positive things.  It’s so scary at first to have a panic attack and anxiety attack because it’s so mysterious and you feel so all alone.  Just answer the questions truthfully and tell yourself that you’re going to be alright.  Good luck.  I’m still new to this and reading all these messages helps me understand better.

Lee,   It was a hard decision for me to finally have to go to the Doc. But I am glad I did. Just talk about what ever comes up. Psych Docs are trained to pick up on things so don’t worry about forgetting something. Just tell the Doc how you feel..Don’t hold anything back no matter how weird it sounds. They have heard it all. I used to think that my doc would be shocked at the things I said……but, no !!! I asked her about every stupid though I had. She was able to reasure me that it was all part of the anxiety illness and I wasn’t really crazy !!!      It will take the Doc more than one visit to really get to know you, so hang in there and keep going. I used to feel sooooo much better after a visit. Then I would start to doubt myself and it was time to go back. After a while I started to look forward to the visits.   After a while I really didn’t have much to say. We just talked about regular stuff. After 4 years I still go every 6 months. We talk about our families and stuff like that.                         Take care Lee,                            Becky – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello All, I have agreed to go talk to someone about my Panic and Anxiety. Well it depends upon the type of therapy that you are going to.  If you are going to a psychotherapist, you will usually talk in great detail about your childhood, and traumatic experiences in your life.  In addition you get into your current situation.  Over time the therapist will start to draw lines as to where your anxiety comes from.  Depending on the type of person you are you can get a lot of help from this type of therapy or nothing at all.  With me I find that it is in my attitude that determines how much I get from therapy.  If I truly speak my about my feelings, and do not close off I can really get a lot off my chest.  I tend to find it really refreshing to get different views on what causes my anxiety.  Others will say they do not get much out of it, and I can see where that would be the case.  If anything you will get alot of things off your chest, that you may not have been able to share with others…. Even really embarrassing personal things.  The main problem I hear about this type of therapy is that you find out a lot of things that could have contributed, but what do you do about it?  They will not give you solutions just the problems that are causing some of your anxiety.  But the old cliche bears some repeating… "the first step to solving a problem, is finding out what the cause is." A behavioral psychologist will tend to focus on your feelings and fears today, and help you think of them in different ways.  CBT is often talked about here, and can be really helpful if you are having a lot of thoughts that are bringing on anxiety.  Phobias, and obsessive thoughts tend to do really good with this type of therapy. Anyway I did not get into too much detail here, and these are just my experiences, so YMMV.  Regardless of the type of therapy you are going to, you should just start talking about whats going on now, mainly with the anxiety.  From there the therapist will usually ask questions to get a feel for where to go from there.  This should cover your first trip to see them. Just remember be honest, and keep an open mind.  You will not benefit from anything you do not believe in.  For me therapy has helped me a lot, and I think anyone can benefit a little from it.  IMO, and YMMV. Good Luck and keep us updated! d – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello All, I have agreed to go talk to someone about my Panic and Anxiety.
