That big drill

Question:

Normally I deal quite well with pain, but it really depends on the situation. Anything that closely resembles my childhood situation triggers me badly, but from the way you and EotS describe this it might well be good solution for me. That one time of yours, that probably wasn’t in Holland? Jernau

They don’t have gas for dentistry in Holland to my knowledge. It was in New Zealand. GlennT

Response:

same here! it’s a nightmare. i hate going to the dentist. hope you wont have to go back again too soon.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – that reverberates through my skull, drilling through the edges of pain with the promise of more to come, that makes the sweat break out and tenses up every muscle to the point where it starts to hurt: I really really hate that drill. I guess I am still very bad in situations where I am completely helpless and where I know someone is going to hurt me, possibly badly. Ptsd in full effect. Thanks for nothing, dad. It wasn’t too painful this time, luckily, but visiting the dentist will never be a hobby of mine. Jernau

Response:

My dentist has good chair-side manners. Hrm, this reminds me of the time my dentist injected the nova and waited a few minutes – then watched as I screamed in pure agony when he began drilling. For some reason or another it had not taken effect. Ever seen Marathon Man? That`s me. Fortunately he stopped within about a second. But hey, what a second.

Oh, yeah.  "Is it safe"?  Yee-haaa…  That’s a nasty pain, to be sure. Tracy Barber

My dentist uses Novocain before drilling and I have found there to be no pain with one exception when he needed to give me more and (stupidly) I told him not to bother.

I was anesthesized, but only in one place, and she started drilling before it fully took effect. But the pain wasn’t too bad, the associations I have with pain and being helpless were. I am trying to deal with a childhood of heavy physical abuse, and I am finally opening up to my emotions about that, and this bit of pain triggered my trauma. Guess I’m just vulnerable right now, it wasn’t the dentist’s fault, it’s all in my head. One day it won’t bother me anymore. Jernau

Sometimes my dentist will put a small amount of topical on before the shot, therefore reducing even the pin prick.  Probably because he just shot me up with 2, 3x the normal amount! My dentist has good chair-side manners. Tracy Barber

Get nitrous!  After a few minutes on the gas I have dreams of living in the dentists chair. Certain types of pain seem to madden me. Teeth drilling being the number one cause. The only time I had nitrous I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and had all the work done in one go. I just wasn’t there… wonderful.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Get nitrous!  After a few minutes on the gas I have dreams of living in the dentists chair. We don’t use that in dentistry anymore. I’ve had it recreationally, and quite enjoyed that. Don’t know about it’s anesthesizing qualities, though I guess the detachment must work on several levels. I always wondered why dentists used to use it. Describe your experiences with it for me, if you like. I can’t even put it in words.  It’s an "out-of-body" feeling. Wherever I am I wouldn’t care if the dentist pierced my skull with a jackhammer.

Not too different from the normal recreational experience then, though I remember from the few times that I’ve tried it that time really seemed to slow down. But I never experienced any pain during these explorational forays so I wouldn’t know how that would feel. If I’m too blitzed to care about any trauma’s then that’s fine with me, so if I ever find a dentist who uses it I will certainly give it a try. Jernau
