Question:
Debbie, Below are some web-links on Prozac and other meds. I tried Wellbutrin for a month. I believe Wellbutrin is in the same class of drugs as prozac, that is selective neuronal uptake inhibitors. That is it slows down the uptake of neurotransmitter back into the nerve cells. The Wellbutrin resulted in increasing anxiety for me. Since I was already extremely anxious this was not a good combination. Make sure your doctor is thorough in his analysis. Mine wasn’t. St. John’s wort works in a different way but with similar effects. I’ve read various accounts of how St John’s wort is suppose to effect the body. Some argue it is an MAO inhibitor and some argue it isn’t. From my readings I came to the conclusion it is an MAO inhibitor. MAO inhibitors, inhibit the creation of monoamine oxidase. Monoamine oxidase’s job in the body is to destroy "extra" neurotransmitters. Recently I’ve tried St. John’s wort and it appears to be helping. This web site has a description of common anti-depressents. http://www.mentalhealth.com/ There is a lot of information here. For each drug there is a discussion on the following topics: Pharmacology Indications Contraindications Warnings Precautions Adverse Effects Overdose Dosage Supplied Research This page is a compilation of research abstracts regarding studies done of St. John’s wort. http://chili.rt66.com/hrbmoore/Abstracts/Hypericum-AB.txt While I’m at it here are two pages on trauma I found useful: David Baldwin’s Trauma Information Pages http://www.trauma-pages.com/ National Center for PTSD (at dartmouth) http://www.dartmouth.edu/dms/ptsd/ And a page with lots of psychology related links. http://www.skidmore.edu/~hfoley/resources.htm Good luck, – Dave (Spot) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – i know i need to take it for a while before i notice a difference…but i have been having headaches i think everyday since i started. has anyone else? i dunno. i want to get better. what does anyone know about prozac. i guess i want to know the bad side affects outweigh the benefits. thanks debbie me, i’m drinking coffee and i’m smoking cigarettes…..i’m a deputy of habit, i can’t forget…..and so i beg for sleep, the child who walked before she crawled…..damn my soul that remembers and clutches to this pain…..the spear in your side is me…..let the rain set me free.–M.E. <o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o <

I don’t know. I was on prozac for about three months…then I had an allergic reaction to it. My whole body broke out in this rash (it looked like someone got a whip and slashed me a thousand times…everywhere). My moods improved though. However, when I went back to the doctors, he said there was nothing he could do for the reaction (which was more bothersome than anything because it itched like hell), and I’d just have to ride it out…three weeks. My friend takes st. john’s wort and he swears by it….I’ve never tried it. I also attempted lithium for a while, and although my moods were better, I had trouble functioning. In my opinion, that drug is just too mind-altering. I didn’t even feel like me…I felt like a bubble. Just there, doing nothing. Choose your drug carefully and if you are going to take them…make sure you find out what the side affects are..and don’t let them tell you that the side affects are minimal….get the truth. For what it’s worth…it takes three weeks for your body and the medication to mesh. Headaches may be due to the changes in body balance from the medication. I used to feel a little woozy at first so I took my medication at bedtime. It doesn’t last… at least it didn’t for me. And, I do notice I don’t have the severe highs and lows… helps with coping with life and not crumbling inside… for me, anyway. Hope this helps.. well sheesh… thanks so much for all the help…i thought i was being silly thinking that the headaches and the st. john’s wort were related. i guess i better start listening to my body more often. i think…well for the time being i will steer from everything….see most days everything is really okay…i would say actually…like 65%….but other days i freak out and birch and complain about nothing important. this stresses kirk out…and reminds myself of my mother who yells and screams when a normal conversation would be just fine. so…i dunno…kirk doesn’t want me to take prozac…or chemically altering drugs…but i mean…i dunno. i hate when i have immature episodes…but ….i guess i obviously need to think about this a lot more. Sorry for jumping in here carey..it’s liz.. I can’t find the original post to this..but I have some insiders advice for Deb Stone.. I found Prozac to be most helpful… The pills I received were in 20mg pills… Usually you start on the 20 and move up to 60mg..which is what I heard was the highest possible dose. The 20mg starting dose gave me troubles sleeping..and at times made it hard to concentrate..which a psychologist told me was not a common side effect..apparently prozac is supposed to help one concentrate.. so it’s iffy there. Now, I did a lot of reading up on Prozac before I started it..the problem was that it was really divided from what I saw The books were either Pro Prozac or anti Prozac..I couldn’t really find much in between. As for headaches..I too got them..but not really until I hit the 40mg dosage…I found that althought it was really hard to sleep at the begining of it..that in about 3 weeks or so I was sleeping better than I ever had in my entire life.. By 60 mg.. I had lost quite a bit of wieght as I had no appitite..which was good seeing as I was put on them for depression and bulemia. When I went on the drug I had ulcers… gum disease..low white cells and well on my way to having some serious throat damage..not to mention a nice death wish.. Prozac really really really helped me..I was on it for quite a while but other ppl’s opinions of me being on it made me get off it… which I s houldnt have let happen. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Good evening Debbie, It is me, Carey. :) My wife and a close friend have both taken St. John’s Wort. My wife for some of the emotional affects of menopause and my friend for dramatic PMS. Both have done rather well with it. In the brochure that we got at our local organic grocery, head aches were mentioned as a ‘potential’ side effect. The person who owns the store suggested smaller dosed than the manufacture and to also take it with meals and cut out or at least cut back on the caffeine. This person is not a doctor by any means, but when it comes to the homeopathic stuff seems to quite a bit. As to Prozac…. 100mg? Wow! I asked a friend of mine who is a therapist about this…she said that the highest dosage she had heard of was 50mg and that was with close supervision. Her experience is that most folks are started on 20mg or less. Also, her sense of it is that Zoloft is much more likely to cause ‘rage’ events than Prozac, but in either case it seems to be exceedingly rare and not at all likely in the first few dosages. Paxil is the third ‘popular’ member of the seretone uptake inhibitor medications, of which Prozac was the first. The interesting thing, again according to my friend, is that while all three medications are closely related, they each can have dramatically different effects on individuals. There was a fourth medication that she mentioned Effor… something or another…I am sure someone here will know what she was referring to, I just can’t remember. But at any rate, it has also had good results with a certain number of folks in dealing with depression. btw…the number one complaint with Paxil is short term memory impairment, which appears to be temporary (at least as far as anyone can remember?
). The key to all of this, is in finding a doctor who will listen to you and will carefully follow up on the progress…my friend is very clear that dosage can be tricky and can make all the difference in the world. I hope some of the above helps…and I wish for you good luck in finding some relief. …still casting bottles into the sea, Carey i know i need to take it for a while before i notice a difference…but i have been having headaches i think everyday since i started. has anyone else? i dunno. i want to get better. what does anyone know about prozac. i guess i want to know the bad side affects outweigh the benefits. thanks debbie _ me, i’m drinking coffee and i’m smoking cigarettes…..i’m a deputy of habit, i can’t forget…..and so i beg for sleep, the child who walked before she crawled…..damn my soul that remembers and clutches to this pain…..the spear in your side is me…..let the rain set me free.–M.E. <o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o<o < — For more information about this posting service, contact: If you wish to get an anonymous email/posting account, visit our sign-up page: http://asarian-host.org/emailform.html

Interesting….i’ve never heard of anyone reacting to prozac that way. It usually takes 2-3 weeks for the drug to build up enough in your system for you to fell *anything*.
That’s what my doctor said. But I asked another doctor about it (cause the feeling of being on speed was too pronounced to not be real) and she said they had started me on way too high of a dose for my size (about 100 mg). As far as feeling irritable and volatile (with a friend who had that experience taking it for a few months) I have a couple theories but I don’t think I know anything any better than anyone else. I remember when they were having all these articles in magazines about whether or not Prozac makes people violent. Anyway, I tend to think that it’s not the Prozac, but that the depression is masking a lot of rage and it comes spilling out as the depression lifts. But, not being a doctor I couldn’t really say there’s any truth in that theory

that back in the middle ages when people were taking it they reported seeing "devils". I’ve thought of looking into that because it sounds pretty interesting. A little known medicinal use of St. Johns wort is also to treat inflammation, joint pain and nerve damage. That’s actually what I learned it was for and I’ve used it for awhile to soak my "bad wrist" in – and it helps quite a bit. And externally there’s no funky side effects. I was actually surprised to see how much it was being talked about as an anti-depresant. I guess I’m kind of "typical American" in that I’m kind of wary of herbs as internal medicine unless a naturopath prescribes it because herbs are really researched by the FDA. I originally was on Seroxat, which is meant to replenish a substance in your brain that will deal with depression so is very natural. I found that Prozac had the opposite affect, I am not on Venlafaxine 37 mg. You simply have to find the right medicine and dosage for you. Side affects are common with most drugs. Doing recovery clean and sober is the best way. Try changing suppliers of the St. John’s Wort. If the headaches are pounding out – there is emotional distress that needs to get out. If they are pounding in – then there is information out here you have to get into you. If they are just a tight band – you are dealing with a freeze response – fear, in the prison of your emotions. If you keep taking drugs to mood alter – nicotine, caffine – you like the uppers cause you have a constant low grade depression going on – this will continually sabotage your recovery. (People who like downers – are manic constantly) Get off of all the drugs Debbie – and do it safely and sanely – one drug at a time. Recommend you start with dairy products – no milk, ice cream, cheese, etc for a month. Then when that is cleaned outta you – the other drugs go so much easier. If you want to go deeper into the drugs – you are going deeper into the disease – especially if you take prozak longer then 6 months – your doctor is a pusher and you are working codependency. Mindtalk will not help you Deb. Get into applied psychophysiology like biofeedback, traditional accupucture and integrative body psychotherapy. Recovery hurts like hell – but to get better all you have to do is face the pain. In a safe, gentle and sane manner. Abusing yourself with recovery like abusing yourself with drugs just replicates the disease and drives the phonomena deeper into the defense sturcture making recovery longer. Or so is my expereince.
