Soul retrieval was a shamanistic ceremony for symptoms like PTSD and dissociation. Ignoring the spiritual or magical part of it, it seems like a ceremony where the whole tribe gets together to support a person to welcome them back into their body. Sounds like a good idea. Just the belonging aspect of the ritual seems very appealing.
