Hi Is anyone aware of clear statements or evidence that Serzone has the potential to be an effective anti-anxiety agent [GAD] if used in conjunction with xanax? I asked this question once before, in a slightly different form, and apologise for the apparent repetition. My searches for Serzone info have all indicated S’s role as an anti-depressant with no mention of anti-anxiety effects at all. With thanks Rick
Rick, Almost every description of Serzone that I’ve found on the web note that Serzone may be especially effective for anxiety relative to the other antidepressants. I don’t know if the requisite studies have been done to show this. I suspect that some people’s thinking here may be something like–the SSRIs can make you want to jump out of your skin when you first take them, Serzone calms you down, therefore it’s better for anxiety. I certainly see more reference to Serzone’s ability to help with anxiety than I do the SSRIs ability to help with it (GAD). On the other hand, Serzone, at least as an antidepressant may not be as effective at the SSRIs are. (Of course, YMMV.) But, Mike, who already answered your post is always singing the praises of Serzone and Xanax together for anxiety. As your doc will tell you, be careful taking the two together, since Serzone and X are metabolized in the same manner. The upshot: You’ll need less X. Good luck! Matt

Rick, F Y I…. From the 9th Annual U.S Psychiatric & Mental Health Congress November 14 – 17, 1996. Posted for informational purposes only. New Strategies in Recognizing and Treating Refractory Depression Complicated by Anxiety Speaker: John Zajecka, M.D. Reporter: Joseph F. Goldberg, M.D. <BIG Snip! "Dr. Zajecka identified key advantages and disadvantages with several major classes of antidepressants. SSRIs, for example, are effective for depression as well as OCD, panic disorder and social phobia, but may be activating and lead to withdrawal phenomena if abruptly discontinued. Bupropion as well as the newer agents venlafaxine, nefazodone and mirtazapine, all appear effective for depression with anxiety, yet they thus far lack documented efficacy for specific anxiety disorders. Dr. Zajecka singled out nefazodone as having a relatively rapid anxiolytic action. Anecdotally, he observed that nefazodone may prove effective for panic disorder as well as PTSD by promoting rapid sleep restoration." Note: Nefazodone is the chemical name for Serzone… Cheers, Mike from OZ – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Is anyone aware of clear statements or evidence that Serzone has the potential to be an effective anti-anxiety agent [GAD] if used in conjunction with xanax?
