According to the Canadian Defense Forces, the Canadian participation INTERFET (International Force East Timor), or as they termed it Operation Toucan, was in the region of 650 personnel including one infantry company of 250. From all I have read, it was the Australian forces who engaged the militias. In fact Captain Roger Girouard, Commander of Canadian Operations for East Timor (TOUCAN) made no mention at all of any Canadian involvment in firefights during an April 2000 press conference. My previous posting was by no means an attempt to denigrate or minimize the contribution which Canadian Forces have made to Peacekeeping missions throughout the world. Just an attempt to seek the truth, and I have not been able to discover any instance in East Timor where the Canadian contingent to INTERFET was involved in combat operations in that area.
