Request for Comments on EMDR Therapy

Question:

There is a lot of information on the internet about EMDR. One place to start reading is http://www.emdr.com     Many people are doing research on EMDR, but there is no research published yet on its effectiveness in the treating of dissociative disorders. Therapists are reporting a variety of results in using EMDR with people who have DID. Many report positive results, but some therapists report that it opens up a lot of material very fast and has been experienced as overwhelming by some patients. There was a task force that wrote guidelines on the use of EMDR with DID, and these guidelines may be found in Francine Shapiro’s book "Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing."     A couple of caveats:     (1) I agree with Federation of C that a therapist ought to have training in EMDR before using it with patients. Specifically, EMDR’s founder recommends that therapists should have completed the second level of training in EMDR before using it with dissociative patients.     (2) Sometimes new (i.e., unfamiliar) material about childhood experiences may emerge during EMDR therapy. Neither patient or therapist should assume that this material is factually accurate; it may be factual or it may not be. The level of emotion felt during EMDR is not a reliable guide to whether the material is an accurate memory.     Peter     (FYI: I’ve had EMDR training) — Clinical Psychologist President-Elect, International Society for the Study of Dissociation 5851 Pearl Road, Suite 305 Parma Hts., OH 44130 Phone:   Voice: 440-845-9011, press 6; Fax: 440-845-9013 Opinions posted here are my own and not necessarily those of ISSD

Has your T had training? Because reading about it is one thing but knowing how to do it right requires good training. Just a thought. A.C. Regarding a specific traumatic event from my past, my T wants to try EMDR. ( I have been in therapy with him for 6 years, and he is the only T i’ve had.)  He gave me a short video segment from 20/20 to watch and learn what EMDR is about.  Our EMDR session is scheduled for this coming Thursday, with a follow-up session the following Monday. I would appreciate any comments you have regarding this type of therapy. Thanks, AMe

More FYI in general is welcome. People are very curious about you, you know. You’re not going to say anything about Dr.Bill of Songbirds WITT posts are you, even though everybodys been hinting you should.

Sorry, I haven’t read any of those posts. I have never heard of that program or Dr. Bill. In general, I know very little about specific inpatient DD programs because I don’t work at one, don’t admit patients to hospitals (Ohio psychologists can’t admit patients), and rarely if ever refer people to DD units. I have nothing against such units, but most of the time patients and I have found ways to use hospitalization short-term, or avoid it altogether throughout treatment. Everybody’s needs are different, though, and some people really need longer-term inpatient treatment to help them develop coping skills.     Peter — Clinical Psychologist President-Elect, International Society for the Study of Dissociation 5851 Pearl Road, Suite 305 Parma Hts., OH 44130 Phone:   Voice: 440-845-9011, press 6; Fax: 440-845-9013 Opinions posted here are my own and not necessarily those of ISSD
