Question:
Saw the film this afternoon… anyone here seen it?? Made me take a long hard look at myself. My generation do not respect the old Grandad was involved in the Dunquirke landings. He would never speak about it, can understand why now. Maybe it’s similar to how abuse suriviers go into shock sometimes and can’t talk about it. That film is the most moving, thought prevoking i am evr lileky to have the pleasure, yet the sorrow to see An amazing film, and i hope evry child in the country is mad to sit down and watch it (even though it’s a 15) to really see that war isn’t gloriousis, it isn’t fun. It’s death and suffering hayley And all i really want is some peace man A place to find common ground All i really want is some comfort A way to get my hands untied And all i really want is some justice Alanis Morisette

Hi Hayley. Both my grandfathers are dead now, but one of them was at Dunkirk as part of the Norfolk Regiment. They weren’t the heroic commandoes you often see in films. In fact the regiment was mainly known for its military band. They drew the short straw and had to act as a rear guard while everyone else made a run for it. Most of the regiment were captured, collected together in a field and machine gunned down where they stood by their captors. That’s the story I was told anyway. My great grandfather suffered from shell shock in the first world war and spent the rest of his life in an institution. I guess it would be classified as PTSD now. War is hell on earth, and you’re right IMO that we ought to remember that. Maybe it’s similar to how abuse suriviers go into shock sometimes and can’t talk about it. : Saw the film this afternoon… anyone here seen it?? yeah, i did. : Made me take a long hard look at myself. : My generation do not respect the old are we the same generation? i dunno. i know that the stories of war always felt very *real* to me. my grandfather was in the war too, but i never knew him. i didn’t know my biological father until after his father had died.
but i’ve read his poetry, and it helps me feel like i know him at least a little. he wrote about the war, too. strange as it sounds, his experience of war makes me feel like he knew me a little, too. because there are deep similarities between the feelings we each have/had from our different experiences of violence. : Grandad was involved in the Dunquirke landings. : He would never speak about it, can understand why now. : Maybe it’s similar to how abuse suriviers go into shock sometimes and can’t : talk about it. : That film is the most moving, thought prevoking i am evr lileky to have the : pleasure, yet the sorrow to see nods. one of the images that struck me hardest was of the man looking for his shot-off hand. when we left the theatre i said to my sister, don’t you feel like that? like we’re hunting around for the pieces someone shot off? i know the movie was about war, not about child abuse. but so many things caught me as similar. especially the courage and cowardice the characters showed, depths of emotion that couldn’t really change the outcome. : An amazing film, and i hope evry child in the country is mad to sit down and : watch it (even though it’s a 15) to really see that war isn’t gloriousis, it : isn’t fun. It’s death and suffering nods. it isn’t tidy and clean, and even the winners lose. silverleaf — Nobody’s home, even if someone is.
