Non combat PTSD

Question:

: : The newsgroup alt.support.trauma.PTSD is slow compared to this one, but : there are knowledgeable folks there who will probably know what you mean. That’s "alt.support.trauma-ptsd" just to be clear. I drop in there now and then to learn and share. I don’t have PTSD myself, but there are some commonalities with PD.                                         Best Wishes,                                         Arthur

Tim, I can’t speak for everyone, but that’s certainly true for me, and the literature bears it out.  That’s one thing that messed up my diagnosis for so long.  They didn’t even do a particularly good job of treating GAD/PD, but nobody ever suggested PTSD since I’m not a vet.  After I suggested it, they went "Heeey, yeah!  That could be it!".  Bunch o geniuses. Have to say, some new (younger) counselors and pdocs I started with the last couple of weeks seem pretty savvy, so there is hope. Brent

Ingrid- My experience has been the same.  Most of the things you find regarding PTSD are combat related.  You should have better luck if do a search for the specific type of trauma (ie, rape, abuse, etc.)  Also, Elliott occasionally posts articles to the group and there is one for PTSD.  If you want a copy, just e-mail me. As for diagnosing it or symptoms that indicate it – that’s hard to say. PTSD can have effects that range from fatigue and apathy to a horrible reliving of the trauma, serious immune system related health problems and of course, panic.  I hope that’s some help. All the best- Lisa remove *stop* when replying by e-mail – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, has anyone any information/experience with <subject? Any search on it mostly turns up combat related articles and I suspect the intensity of symptoms is quite different. Any information on how/if diagnosed and day to day experiences that suggested PTSD are welcome. Oh, good grief, now I have to apologize to my Islamic friends.  The word was "shit".  I gotta stop accepting every spell check suggestion. No problem. :) Just wanted to nip any possible confusion in the bud. Best Wishes, Arthur

Try this: http://www.dartmouth.edu/dms/ptsd/Survivors.html I know what you mean about combat.  There are articles at this site on natural disaster, children, relationships, etc. as well as combat and my personal hell, EMS. Someone on here (one of those Brits the trolls love to hate) maintains an excellent web page with links that might help.  Arthur, is that you? Keep your eye peeled for an weekly "mini-faq" that can help too.     Try using Boolean string "abuse PTSD" or "abuse caused PTSD" on you fav search engine. Came up with quite a few at http://www.metacrawler.com .                                                     Tim;) — When you here hoof beats, think of horse’s, not zebra’s
