Question:
The only gyn he’s ever heard of is Mildred Hanson. Does anyone know Dr. Hanson, or heard anthing about her? Does anyone know of any other female gyns in the Minneapolis area who might be sensitive to the needs of very anxious patients? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. LMJ
Hi LMJ, Welcome to ASAP!! I am sorry for all the difficulties you are going through. I don`t live in Minneapolis, but maybe I can suggest something. How about asking your therapist, if she knows any ob/gyn that would be sympathetic to your needs. The medical community is usually close knit, and it might be a good way to find a decent doctor. Another option is call your local hospital, usually doctors that are practicing in your local hospital have a practice close by. I would explain your PTSD and maybe they could recommend someone. I know there are some dentists that actually advertise that they are accomadating to people that are phobic about dentists. So maybe there will be a ob/gyn that is more understanding about patients with PTSD or any other kind of anxiety. When you do decide to see a doctor, I suggest you have a consult with her and talk to her about your fears. It will help you feel more comfortable, and if you decide that you don`t like the doctor, you leave. This prevents you from being on the examining table and meeting the doctor for the first time in that kind of setting. The key is getting you comfortable before your exam. And that means you will have to talk to the doctor about your needs and fears. Take care!! Jackie
Response:
I’m a 35 yr old female, and have been suffering from PTSD since I was 14. My PTSD is a result of a bad medical experience. Since then, I avoid all docs and health care, especially anything gyn-related. I tried therapy, and it seemed to make matters worse. My therapist suggested something she called "desensitizing" which involved gradually and gently being exposed to the things that cause my panic attacks. I scheduled an appointment with a specialist she suggested and had panic attacks every time I thought about the upcoming session. After "the threat" of the upcoming session had passed (I didn’t show up for it), my attacks went away. I recently moved to the Minneapolis area and find myself having some reproductive issues which really should be dealt with. I’m starting to have panic attacks again, as a result of thinking about finding and seeing a gyn. It’s been 4 weeks since these issues have come up and it’s getting to the point where I really need to make an appointment with a gyn here. The only person I know in Mpls is my boyfriend, who, although supportive, can’t really help me find a sensitive, female gyn. LMJ
