need advice & have a question

Question:

hello this is my first time here, i was recently robbed(4 days ago) at gun point by 2 men and i have been having alott of trouble dealing with it.  i went to the dr 2 days after it happened because my head wouldnt stop hurting, i thought it was stress but i have a concusion from when the 1 man hit me 3 times in the head with the gun.  anyway my question is…. are zanex and darvoset addictive ? thats what the dr has me on. i dont want to get addicted to anything.  the zanex makes me feel really goofy/high. it is for my anxiety i keep having about 15-20 times a day. thanks for all of your help…..Darla

So sorry to that of this, Pugs,     how many xanax and what dosage per day? Both xanax and darvocet can be addictive to those who react strongly to it………Perhaps instead of xanax, a low does of valium lasts longer than the xanax, in my own experience, and since I’m a recovering alcoholic, I worry about my meds also. Let us know how you’re doing. Darla Xanax is an anti-anxiety medication and is addictive if taken long term and if you take it more than needed or recommended by your doctor (very important).  If taken only when you really need it – for occasional anxiety then addiction can be easily avoided.  Are you taking it 15-20 times a day?  Even at a small dosage (.25 mg) that is alot after only a couple days (20 a day would exceed the max dosage).  If your anxiety is that bad then the doctor needs to be looking at other alternatives (or you need to be talking to another doctor). Darvocet is a painkiller – a narcotic.  According to rxlist.com dependence will only be a concern if you take higher dosages than recommended by your doctor over a long period of time.  If you’re afraid of addiction then you can change it to a different painkiller – there are ones out there that will not cause dependence.   As with all medications that you take **under a doctor’s supervision** any addiction that may result can be controlled by a weaning process that the doctor can control.   chech View the AST-PTSD FAQ @ http://astpfaq.tripod.com/astpfaq/

Hi-dee-ho! I am a proponent of non perscription type of solutions having gone through a couple of narcotic type drugs that had NO effect on my daughter. Check out Cary Charles Rhodiola posts. St. John’s wort is suppose to be good, but it takes a month of so of constant use to take affect. Also it has some side effects that many SSRI’s have and that’s a lower interest in sex. Not to say it would be a fun thing with a hurt head! My mother took zanex for depession years ago and then I read or heard that it also causes psychotic breaks. Something to look up and ponder. Some times doctors are quick to sooth their patients with drugs. —> Sue <— "Pugs Of Colors" <pugsofcol…@aol.com> wrote in message news:20011220111826.11818.00001197@mb-fx.aol.com… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> hello this is my first time here, i was recently robbed(4 days ago) at gun > point by 2 men and i have been having alott of trouble dealing with it. >  i went to the dr 2 days after it happened because my head wouldnt stop > hurting, i thought it was stress but i have a concusion from when the 1 man hit > me 3 times in the head with the gun. >  anyway my question is…. are zanex and darvoset addictive ? > thats what the dr has me on. i dont want to get addicted to anything. >  the zanex makes me feel really goofy/high. it is for my anxiety i keep having > about 15-20 times a day. thanks for all of your help…..Darla

Xanax is not typically used for depression and xanax has a warning not to be used on patients that have a history of psychotic tendancy.  As with all medications, how each drug affects a person is different (YMMV), so how a drug affects your daughter or yourself or someone else does not necessarily mean it’s not a good drug. >Some times doctors are quick to sooth their patients with drugs.

In Darla’s case the doctor’s have to give her something – she is in an acute phase after a critical incident.  Suggesting she try an herb is not the answer. She needs something to help with the anxiety and pain now. The drug the doctors suggest may not be the right drug but they can be adjusted – automatically switching to herbs is not always the right thing to do – especially in the acute phase. All Prescription drugs are not bad…cases in point that I am all too familiar with: One case of severe OCD that so dibilitated this young women she couldn’t work or leave her home.  Prozac gave her a life and now she even works. Case upon case of severe panic disorder of varying degree of severity in which xanax, ativan, klonopin, paxil and/or valium have given these people back their lives – sometime from being housebound to actually going back to work. Cases of agoraphobia in which the addition of paxil (and maybe xanax) gave the person the opportunity to go shopping for the first time in years.   Social phobias with anxiety in which the addition of paxil and later zoloft allowed the person to go to university. These are just samples of the many success cases of prescription medication stories from the dozens, if not hundreds, of anxiety-panic disorder related people I’ve talk to every day over the past few years. Herbs are an addition/alternative for some but I always add the caveat that they must research any herb they take thoroughly because many doctors don’t know the interactions and that taking herbs with prescription drugs can cause interactions – most especially St. John’s Wort should not be taken with any Anti-Depressant medication.   I’ve considered them but haven’t been able to find enough information on interactions to calm my fears about taking them.  I even had a hard enough time finding information on the net about interaction of vitamins with Rx meds – once I was satisfied, I started taking them. With every post someone makes on the effects of any medication, one should end it with YMMV – because we all react differently – whether it be drug or herb.   YMMV (or YKMV for us Canucks :) chech View the AST-PTSD FAQ  @ http://astpfaq.tripod.com/astpfaq/ – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->—> Sue <— >"Pugs Of Colors" <pugsofcol…@aol.com> wrote in message >news:20011220111826.11818.00001197@mb-fx.aol.com… >> hello this is my first time here, i was recently robbed(4 days ago) at gun >> point by 2 men and i have been having alott of trouble dealing with it. >>  i went to the dr 2 days after it happened because my head wouldnt stop >> hurting, i thought it was stress but i have a concusion from when the 1 >man hit >> me 3 times in the head with the gun. >>  anyway my question is…. are zanex and darvoset addictive ? >> thats what the dr has me on. i dont want to get addicted to anything. >>  the zanex makes me feel really goofy/high. it is for my anxiety i keep >having >> about 15-20 times a day. thanks for all of your help…..Darla

Hi Darla, I think it depends upon whether you have an addictive type personality. I’ve been on xanax for years, took a break from it for a couple years and went back on.  I’ve never abused it or exceeded my dosage, didn’t have any trouble when I went off it, except that my symptoms got a lot worse, my anxieties and  isolation.  I take it along with an antidepressant and a sleeping pill.  As far as feeling ‘high’, I believe it takes a while for your system to ‘adjust’ to it.  I don’t get any kind of ‘high’ from it, it simply works to soothe the extreme anxiousness and panic attacks, helps me to function, be able to leave my house and be around people. Best wishes, tiny dancer

Herbal remedies have their place, but shouldn’t be combined with prescription medications.  Those with acute symptoms need prescription drugs and when the right combination can be found they are very helpful for those of us who take them to live a much more normal life.  I think I’ve tried just about every antidepressant available and am doing much better on the combination I’m now on.  I think xanax has gotten a ‘bad rap.’  I’ve found it to be quite helpful combined with my zoloft.  It’s helped me be able to leave my home once again.  Without it I wasn’t even able to manage to go to my mailbox. tiny dancer "Sue Cole" <jsco…@qwest.net> wrote in message

I have to take issue with your characterization of St. John’s wort. The clinical studies done on it have actually shown treated subjects had fewer side-effects than in the placebo groups, in some cases, and are quite comparable to placebo in all other studies. The most common side-effects are gastric upset and headache, but those are in less than 2% of all subjects. Response is in two to three weeks, and I’ve never heard of sexual side-effects from SJW. My personal response is to become horny as a goat (anecdotal, but contrary to your suggestion). Some people do become more sensitive to UV light, but that can easily be countered with B-vitamins and/or sunblock agents. Unlike SSRIs, there is no recognized overdose syndrome. You can take as much as is required for symptomatic relief. In one study on AIDS patients, they were taking over 20,000 mg/day, far in excess of the typical recommendation of 900 mg/day for mild to moderate depression. 1800 mg/day is recommended for more severe depressive symptoms. In reference to the original poster, I found that EMDR was a wonderful treatment for the acute trauma of an assault. It can provide swift and massive release of the emotional burden. Just my thoughts, Larry

I’m really sorry to hear of the scary and violating event you survived. Glad you found us here.  With treatment and a bit of therapy I think you may find healing from this trauma very possible. I hope so. I agree with the post about keeping herbal remedies out of the cocktail of prescribed meds.  For now, the combination sounds good. I think perhaps valium would be a better choice than xanax but we all handle meds differently. Its a suggestion that has merit and you may want to talk to your doc about it. A painkiller will be a temporary thing for the injury and I wouldn’t worry a whole lot about addiction unless you use it outside the limits set by the doc. If the amount he prescribed doesn’t work, CALL and talk about either higher dose or something else. Some people need different pain killers and doctors know that. Stick to the doctor’s prescription and keep communication open. Just one thing I’d like to add. Personally, I would avoid alcohol or any recreation drugs at this time if you’re a user or occasional user. Speaking from a trauma point of view, these can be very tempting to numb the pain (physical and/or mental.)  Just a proactive suggestion from someone who has been there and learned =) Take care of yourself and realize that yes, you’ve survived a trauma, and that you do need to take care of yourself. Anxiety is an obviously common response so do what you need to in order to feel safe, but find someone you trust to run things by. Maybe we get a bit out of whack with things when a trauma happens and it always helps to have a trusted friend, spouse or relative to talk to these things about. (for example if you’ve never handled guns but want to go buy one today – talk about it with someone you trust.) Best wishes and be safe, and good to yourself. Kristine
