Question:
Well, there was The Bell Jar, but it’s not something I’d recommend for a person suffering from depression, since Sylvia Plath eventually took her own life. But a great book and not a bad movie. – Mason Barge "If this is coffee, please bring me some tea. If this is tea, please bring me some coffee." – Abraham Lincoln
Response:
Not exactly about depression, but you may try The Mosquito Coast. DG

perhaps this request has been made in the past, but can anyone recommend any movies dealing with depression? ones that can be rented and whatnot. i can’t thing of any right now. i can name a few that had suicide(s) in them, but not someone struggling with depression. maybe there aren’t any. two hours of watching someone lay in bed or write posts to this group…hardly oscar material. but maybe there are some and i just never saw them.
Well, a couple come to mind – Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (Dorothy Parker, languishing through the 20’s) …but I think my favorite movie dealing with emotional difficulties would be Peter Weir’s film "Fearless". PTSD and depression. Amazing film and awesome performances by Jeff Bridges and Rosie Perez. I can only think of two "depressing" movies that are in some way also about depression. One is Sophie’s Choice, and the other is that movie about Sid viscious and his girlfriend (I think the name of it is Sid and Patty, or whatever her name was.) Both movies are about people who are clearly depressed, and both end in suicides. The only sort of "educational" movies about depression that I can think of are the "Blue something" that keeps airing on HBO, and some movie about Kalidasscope eyes or glasses or something that is narrated by the Beaver’s older brother. Man, I have a great memory don’t I!!!! Don’t know if either are "rentable". Anything with Greta Garbo in it. The typical plot–beautiful, influential woman (with glamorous clothes and beautiful accent) fights loneliness and general emotional malaise. Dashing male rogue charms her, and she finds a brief moment of happiness. Cheesy, but still fun. I would suggest Queen Christina (one of my favorites) and maybe Ninotchka, if you want to laugh. You might also want to watch Ordinary People, which deals with family relations after the death of a son. It’s very depressing to me, but it’s still an incredible movie that deals with a lot of the things we have to struggle through. As for something that deals with depression as a disease, rather than just a character trait, I can’t help you.

Hmmm.. Ordinary People is my personal fave.
It always makes me feel better to see that movie.. it hurts, but deep inside crying along with it makes me feel a heck of a lot better. *BB*, Becky Rebbeca Dasaro/Tana Silversong http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Oracle/4489 "A kiss can be a comma, a question mark or an exclamation mark.
