Question:
The ADA covers an individual with a disability that isa physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities and has a record of such an impairment and is regarded as having such an impairment. (From the ADA manual issuesd bty the EEOC) A major liffe activity is defined as walking, speaking, breathing, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, learning, caring for oneself, working. These are only some examples. The working impairment must be related to a class of jobs not just one particualr job. Reasonable accomodations include such things as modified work schedules, how an essential function of a job is performed, restructuring a job, among others. Documentation is required for an employer to make the accomodation. Hope this helps…

Hi Nigel! I meant no disrespect towards you and/or your ptsd problems. I’ve apparently stayed in a ‘bad’ marriage for far too long because I wasn’t treated for ptsd 30 years ago. I’ve been in therapy etc for almost 5 years now. I own my own business which barely gets me by as it is difficult, if not impossible, for me to concentrate on developing it. The concept is ‘good’ … my performance for more than 60 minutes each day is iffy. Anyway, when I was thinking about perhaps getting some kind of temporary work to make ends meet, your post came flying off the screen at me. I’d like to know if there is some help within the ADA for us. How can I get even a temporary job when I cannot concentrate easily (if at all) etc etc etc? I’m hoping someone has an answer for you. Smile and there will be a reason to smile. Nancy posted and mailed

Hi Nigel! Personally, I hope folks reply to the list. It never occured to me that PTSD might be covered under the ADA. What kind of ‘workplace accomodation’ would be appropriate for PTSD? I cannot imagine. Nancy posted and mailed
