Is there anyone here like me?

Question:

I have, for the last year and a half, had certain compulsions that I absolutely cannot do anything about.. even though I know that they are definetly irrational. Therefore, I went to the doctor and told him what I was doing and he put me on LUVOX.  I take 50mg per day now, and have for 2 months.  I can’t really tell yet if it is helping me or not.  I mean, sometimes I think it is because I feel more calm now (less anxiety or "nervous stomach" as I like to call it) but I still carry out my compulsions just like always. I really don’t want to have to go into detail about what it is that I do.. but I’ll just say that is has to do with cleanliness and perfection and it takes up more than 4 hours of my day (every day).. everything from my house to my car to my daughter, to myself… everything. There are certain things I simply cannot do until I other things are done first.  It’s ritual I assume.. what ever it’s called it’s ridiculous. And it’s making me sick. I was told by a complete stranger that I could overcome this problem without medication.  He gave me some pointers which I found to be useless.  I guess the reason I posted is because I just wanted to find someone out there similar to me.. because absolutely nobody in my life knows I have this enormous problem.

well.. i posted here to try and find some help or just somone to chat with about ocd, and a couple of you responded but the rest is irrelavant bulshit.  Hasn’t anyone used LUVOX for any period of time and can’t someone tell me if it helped them or what?  I thought it was the #1 perscribed drug for the treatment of ocd? Well..in my case it doesnt seem to be helping tremendously so can anyone suggest a different medication for me to ask my doctor for?  please someone give me some advice, my ocd is wearing me very thin these days.  thanks

Response:

You might ask him about Anafranil and Zoloft. The first medication specifically treats OCD. The second medication treats anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD. It takes a while for Zoloft to affect OCD.

Hiya Rene, I was on Zoloft, which did help..but different people respond to different meds. I think your dr should come up with another to try soon if the Luvox doesn;t work. How long has it been? Sometimes it takes some time to kick in. Anyway don’t be disheartened, there are plenty more meds to try! :) Hang in there..and there are a few of us here who are always here to chat about ocd..don’t mind the irrelevant fwds and what not! We’re here!! :) ~Am~ xxx =)

Sometimes I go into obnoxious mood states. I am feeling better now but I might change.

Seeing a doctor is a much better option. > I guess the reason I posted is because I just wanted to find > someone out there similar to me.. because absolutely nobody in my life > knows I have this enormous problem.

There are non-med treatments for OCD but ‘therapy with a complete stranger’ is not one of them. The most recommended is CBT, cognitive behavioral therapy. Ask you doc about it (though if he hasn’t mention it already, he’s likely not too knowledable about OCD) or find a CBT therapist who understands OCD on your own. http://www.nacbt.org/whatiscbt.htm http://www.ocfoundation.org/ocf1030a.htm http://www.psychguides.com/oche.html
