Iron supplements

Question:

I’d be very careful about too much Iron intake. Besides the major constipation, it can lead to other health problems. I’d do some research. The clerk at the store was on the right track. Lee

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I also saw on some herbal show that you need to ensure you have good level of vitamin C to absorb the iron, or else it doesnt soak in properly..  Not sure how true that is, if you take salt to help absorb water – I guess the same principal counts for other things too.. Sue Hi Gang, every summer, I find myself feeling more tired than ever and to counter this, I usually take up to 28mg of Iron a day which is twice the RDA, can this have any adverse effects on a person, other than turning rusty when it rains. I say this , because when I bought the supplement last week, The health food shop assistant gave me the third degree, ie, do you really need it, why do you think you need it, have you had a blood test , etc, Cheers, Ian I don’t know if too much iron can harm you but  there is no reason to take more than you need. A simple blood test can show if you need to take iron. Excess iron is known to contribute to heart disease.  A healthy adult male, whose hematocrit and hemoglobin counts are normal, should *NEVER* take iron supplements. On the other hand, if a man’s blood count is abnormally low, a physician should be consulted.  There is no way that a healthy male can be anemic without a reason, and so self-treatment should not be attempted.  I should know.  I once had an abnormally low red blood count, and saw a doctor.  It turned out I had a peptic ulcer. — Steven D. Response:

It’s right, vit C does help iron to be absorbed. Vit B6 is needed for zinc absorption and utilization, all the B vits are required for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, iron is antagonistic towards zinc so high iron intake can lead to zinc deficiency, iron, like calcium is very rarely deficient on a reasonable diet, the most common problem is too much sodium and too little magnesium and it can be quite dangerous to take single minerals without the proper knowledge. Health problems take years to develop. You can’t solve it by taking one mineral and one vitamin. Balance is vital. Visit http://www.nutrition2000.org.uk and feel free to contact me. Steve

Dear Ian. Please have your hemoglobin checked. I have to take Iron supplements because my h. is low at 9.8. I am tired but I blame the lack of sleep more than the low count. I think you better check out the cause of your tiredness before you take too much iron. Julie Got questions?  Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. Up to 100 minutes free! http://www.keen.com

Ian – it is not a good idea to get too much iron.  See the doc about the symptoms of fatigue.  You have had a lot going on.  Could it be depression?? Dear Ian, Too much iron is as bad as too little iron. Usually men don`t need to take iron supplements, a good diet is all that is needed. I think you should talk to your doctor about this before you continue to take the iron. More importantly, is finding what the cause of this increasng fatigue is. It could be a depression, your thyroid or some other physical condition. I hope you feel better soon. Take care. Jackie Got questions?  Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. I don’t know if too much iron can harm you but  there is no reason to take more than you need. A simple blood test can show if you need to take iron. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –
