Imipramine Users–Please Read.

Question:

If you are taking this medication, please let me know what dosage, for how long you have been taking it and any side effects that it is causing. (If taking other meds and not sure which is causing a particular side effect so state). I realize from all my reading that we should discuss medicines with our particular doctor. That has been stated TIME  and TIME again. I also realize that medicines may affect different people differently. So of those two thoughts, I am allready well aware. But-since these medicines are mass-produced: they may also have SIMILIAR effects depending on dosage and length of time taken. So if you are taking THIS medicine, I would greatly appreciate your thoughts. Thanks-Dan

Hi Dan, I have been taking this medice for around 8-9 years and the only side effect that I still notice from time to time is a dry mouth.  When I started the medicine I had a temporary increase in anxiety, ringing ears, dry mouth, blurred vision and a little trouble falling and staying asleep and some mild constipation. I was ramped up to a theraputic does of 150mg per day and was kept on that dose for approx. 3yrs until we had the panic well under control, I was then weaned back to a maintenance dose of 50mg a day which I am still on to this day with no re-occurence of panic.  The thing that I like with the imipramine is that it does not get rid of all the anticipatory anxiety and has allowed me to learn to  deal with this anxiety myself.  As well the imipramine is a lot older drug that the SSRI’s and others which means that there is a bit more information on the long term effects of this medicine on the body. I hope this is the type of info you were looking for. Cheers, Glynn

typical imipramine sides are: dry mouth, blurred vision, orthostatic hypotension (dizzy on standing), night sweats.  Once on 300mg, I had em all.

This is what I was looking for. I believe that my 25mg dosage; is too low. I’ll ask the doctor to increas it next week at the appt. But there are so many other panicky issues going on with me right now-I’m not sure that I may still need the xanax. Many thanks for your reply. Been taking *10* MG/day at night for many years. Helps with sleep & really blocks panic attacks. The panic blocking effect lasts for more than 24 hours. I’m careful not to miss the dose because things get really unpleasant if I do miss. I experience many of the usual side-effects including constipation. Most have subsided to one degree or another with time. I also take about 20 MG of diazepam, in divided doses, /day. A curious thing with imipramine and me is that I’m totally sensitive to the drug’s vendor. I do well _only_ with tabs made by GG. Go figure. I realize that 10 MG/day is considered a really sub-therapeutic dose but it works for me. A GP I once had told me that she commonly prescribes imipramine at this dose for sleep. So, more isn’t necessarily better. Of course, everyone is different…

WOW! Imipramine was one of the first AD’s I was ever on. — It gave me too much tremors and I had to stop it. Paxil was the best AD for me but it made me want to hurt people just for the fun of it. In Real life the Puppet Master (Ray) had to stop me from pushing a stranger down an escalator just because I thought it would be funny. Then I killed one of my kids fish because it was looking at me. :-( Xanax works great for my anx/pan it’s the depression due to my PTSD that’s the real bitch.

Have you tried other SSRI’s?

LH– If it works it works. At first, I thought this imipramine was no good for me. Kept me awake–just like zoloft. The strange thing is that on both meds it states "may cause drowsiness". No way-Jose. But after two weeks-it did start to cause a little drowsiness in about an hour or two after taking it. So-I was happy that it was NOT like zoloft in that respect. But I have noticed that after waking up–shortly therafter I feel more anxious and need an earlier xanax. So-I was asking what is the general working dosage for most people taking this med. YES- I KNOW WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT and must check with our doctors. But it can be comforting (at least a little to me) to have some idea what dosage others have found to be effective. I’m aware that "a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing." But to old dan–that would be me; No knowledge is even worse. But then again as I get older, often think–"wish I didn’t know now–what I didn’t know then".  Thanks to you all very much.
