Triggers are very personal and often specific to the type of trauma experienced. Talk with your daughter and her therapist about your concerns. I am the adoptive mother of several children. My only daughter suffers from PTSD due to severe abuse by her family of origin.  She has been my child for 7 years and has made alot of progress. Lately, she has had an acute psychotic episode and has required inpatient hospitalization to get stabalized.  My questions relate to my interaction with my daughter. What kinds of things or actions trigger PTSD victims?   How can I best guide my teen without triggering her? I know the questions are fairly vague. I would appreciate any advise. Thanks, Marilyn

Hi Marilyn! My sincere thanks to you for this daughter.  I surely wouldn’t adopt me. > My questions relate to my interaction with my daughter. > What kinds of things or actions trigger PTSD victims?   How can I best guide > my teen without triggering her?

You cannot guess on a given day what will be a trigger.  She may not know either.  It just happens. I’d talk with her therapist about your responsibility, if any.  In my son’s case, I was told by his therapist that the symptoms were my son’s and he had to learn to manage them for himself.  YMMV Smile and there will be something to smile about! Hi Marilyn, your daughter maybe relieved to know that there areother children and teens that endure PTSD I had gotten a great book from my mother a while back called "too scared to cry" it is a study of behaviours significant to PTSD it is by Lenore terr-she had done the book more as a study of the kids who were in the chincilla(SP) bus kidnapping in the 1970’s How much stress has your daughter been under in the last while undo stress (completely unrelatted to the abuse)  can seem to trigger things-such as eurinesis(bedwetting) cutting, suicide, nightmares, hallucinations, you name it.  the biggest thing is to ask your daughter what triggered the episode in the first place- was it bullying was it the load of school work was it subtle comments, was it a fear of not doing well enough, a fear of losing you?a lot of questions but ask her if there was something you insinuated that she was picking up.  maybe she had another event thatcaused hersome great trauma and she has come to the end of her coping skills(they have been maxed out)- remember trust is a big issue with PTSD and she may not like the new shrink her doctors assigned her. i hope this helps gemma Marilyn Rogers <ktownrog…@earthlink.net> wrote in message
