Question:
Hello all, First off, I want to thank everyone who emailed and posted to my problem post, about not being able to post. I hope this one gets through. <g> Due to booking problems, I’ve not had the chance to get in to see anyone about medicine for PTSD. We’re in a small town where all medical staff are booked. So, my "family doctor" set me up with Paxil last week. Has anyone tried this, for PTSD? Thanks in advance. Mike
Response:
Mike, I’ve never taken Paxil but I have and continue to take its relatives. I’ve taken prozac, effexor and now take Wellbutrin. From the people I’ve chatted with Paxil is used to treat the depression that usually accompanies PTSD but it also helps with other symptoms. Paxil is being touted now as helping with social anxiety and isolation which certainly is a problem for many with PTSD. There’s a good site with information about medications and disorders etc. http://www.mentalhealth.com/ As with most Anti-depressants you might have some initial side effects that might make you rethink taking the medication – stick with it for at least four weeks. Most side-effects fade after a week or so. It takes anywhere from four to eight weeks for the medication to become fully effective so you shouldn’t expect to ‘feel’ better overnight. In fact, it might be so gradual that you may not notice any improvement – but others around you would. Paxil, like any AD, won’t solve all your problems but it can give you a level of functioning that will enable you to carry on with everyday life and therapy. Are you booked with a doctor for regular therapy? Medication by itself can’t do very much if you don’t tackle what causes you to take the med in the first place. On note about Paxil itself – it seems to have a limited period of effectiveness. Alot of people have noticed that it stops being as effective after months or a couple years. Sometimes an increase in dosage can help but if it doesn’t a switch to another AD is usually not a problem. There are also some good sites on PTSD. You can look through them yourself and if the doctor you are seeing now is not familiar with PTSD there may be stuff you would want to print off for him to read. (or give him the site). More and more information is becoming available and thankfully more doctors are becoming more familiar with PTSD and how to treat it. http://www.trauma-pages.com/index.phtml http://www.ptsd.com/ PTSD.com has a ton of links so you should have no problem finding an answer to any questions – depending on how good your concentration for reading is. People on this NG are a wealth of personal experiences that will convince you that you’re not alone and not crazy, so feel free to participate. Wow….I can type forever. Enough rambling. .. Hi Mike, Yes, I have tried Paxil in the past for treating my ptsd, and found it did not agree with me. I went through several meds before I found one that worked. However, I have a friend who is on Paxil for her ptsd and she swears by it. So, I guess with each of us it is different.

Hi Michael, I’ve been on Paxil for about 5 years now. It’s been a good AD for me. Previously, I was on Prozac, and then Zoloft. Effexor did not work for me. Each person is different, but I think you’ll find that your MD will be able to find the correct anti-depressant without a problem. Mary "Michael Cline" <m.cl…@naxs.com> wrote in message
