Dinner with my therapist

Question:

hello all, well last night was my dinner date (graduation present) from my therapist and i had the best time ever. we went to a nice restaurant where there was a piano player and the food was awesome. best part was the "therapy talk" after the meal.  we talked about different types of therapy and how so few therapist know about traumas and ptsd. see i had been to several therapist before him and the last lady i saw had a Phd. they all diagnosed me as being severe clinically depressed and one or two had me diagnosed as borderline personality disorder. i just find it mind blowing that not many therapists look at the trauma part and how much it goes undiagnosed. i could have set and talked with him for hours about the psychology aspect of the professional aspect of therapy and we did for a while. i will be so glad to earn my bachelors so i can at least start in the field and get my feet wet. hope everyone has a great weekend.  it is raining here–i am so sick of the rain. my back is better but i am trying to use good judgement and not work with it nad the setting around the house is killing me. jeannie

Response:

Hi Jeannie, I wanted to chime in my 2 cents, being a former therapist with her own trauma, plus working with clients and PTSD, that most therapists are in denial about what happened to them and that’s why they don’t recognize "us." My mentor once told me "never underestimate the level of denial in the helping professions." I’ve found she’s 100% right. Good for you for hanging in and finding the right person for you! Liz

Response:

Hi Liz, When you said >being a former therapist with her own trauma,

does that mean you used to be a therapist?   >that most therapists are in denial about >what happened to them and that’s why they don’t recognize "us."

I find this to be true as well. I was just curious if you had been or are a therapist and if so what area, if any, do you specialize in. Have a great day Jeannie
