Question:
Chip, I don’t personally like romance novels but knew of a woman that brought them to work(I worked in a hospital) and she would blatantly read them at lunch while she ate…I asked her what she saw in them and she said, escapism. I don’t like them, the plots are watered down, the sex in some of them is just way too much and personally, Favio, Fabio, whatever his name is…is a total turn off, IMO…Damsels in distress, ugh!!!!!!! I like a good book that makes you think about it long after you have read it…Those books are a dime a dozen. Now I am only giving MY opinion, it’s fine if anyone on ASAP likes them, again, some women and men I suppose, like to escape in a fine romance. Then again, I am not into anything SciFi really, except some of Crichton and that one book I read by George Stewart, Earth Abides. To each his own! Cheryl :o)
Why do women read romance novels? I think that one is pretty easy – the same reason men watch porn… except women are not as visual and, let’s face it, men just aren’t as nice to look at. All those dangly things… Perhaps just a hetero male perspective? Snit — Snit’s Anxiety Suggestions: http://www.treefort.org/~snit/anxiety.html One persons methods of coping with an anxiety disorder.

Yesterday I bought Kaplan and Sadock’s "Synopsis of Psychiatry" which is almost 1400 pages long. It’s really big and heavy, and the print is tiny.
Chip, some day you are going to accidently stumble upon "the cure!" Now Chip, since you are into heavy reading, I would like to suggest KENNEDY by Theodore Sorensen. It was the #1 best seller, I forget how many years ago. I can get you an autographed copy, if you would like, since he’s my cousin (Ted Sorensen, not JFK). Dot : ) P.S. – One of his latest books is WHY I AM A DEMOCRAT, written just for you. LOL.
Response:
Ken, you would enjoy Earth Abides, I will have to find the author.
Thanks Cheryl, Ken. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am an avid, if not obsessive reader. I have always loved to read, I read anything I can get my hands on, can’t imagine anyone not enjoying reading! I haven’t made it to the library in a year or so, unfortunately, due to not having the time! So yesterday I spent a fortune on some books at SuperTarget. I was looking for "His Bright Light" by Danielle Steel, but they didn’t have it. I ended up getting "A Child Called "It" ". I’m already halfway through it. I heard of this book about a year ago and have been looking for it. It’s written by Dave Pelzer, and it’s his true story of major chidhood abuse. It’s a very sickening, heart-wrenching, saddening account of the way he was treated by his family, specifically his mother. The book is considered Self-help/Psychology/Inspirational. And even while it is almost too horrifying to bear, it is an inspirational story of his willingness to battle his mother with wits, to survive, to hope. I also got a book by Iyanla Vanzant, I have seen her on Oprah many times and she has said things that really made sense and got through to me. She has alot of books out, and I picked "Yesterday, I Cried; Celebrating the Lessons of Living and Loving". I’ll let you know how that read goes! Of course, I got my kids some books and my boyfriend a Star Wars series book! If you know of any good books, or some great read recommendations, please share them with me! Take care, Amanda Hi Amanda, can’t remember who wrote it (possibly Henri Michel, i could be completely wrong there though) but Papillon is one one of the best books i’ve ever read. You might have seen the film with Steve Mcqueen but the book is a 1000 times better. If you like sci fi, Dune by Frank Herbert’s pretty good. If you like biographies, Jim Morrison ones are always good for a laugh trying to work out the fact from myth and legend (is he even dead? ha ha ha). The Stand and The Shining by Stephen King always stick out in my memory as well, i know he wrote lots of good stuff after but , for me, never anything to match those two. One flew over the cuckoos nest (Ken Kesey), A clockwork orange (Anthony Burgess) and anything by Irvine Welsh are good reads. I’ve just bought American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, looking forward to reading it, just the stuff for us anxiety sufferers. Ken. Take care, Amanda Yesterday I bought Kaplan and Sadock’s "Synopsis of Psychiatry" which is almost 1400 pages long. It’s really big and heavy, and the print is tiny. It sure is interesting, but it made me fall asleep twice yesterday. I think I’ll read it just at bedtime when I want to fall asleep right away. The Bible (it’s got tiny print too) helps me to fall asleep also. I figure with these two books insomnia will never be a problem. But I may have to buy a magnifying glass. Chip
You too Chip? LOL…..When all else fails and I can’t seem to shake an episode of insomnia, reading a few pages of Deuteronomy always does the trick
It works better for me than any of those OTC sleep meds I tried ages ago like Sleepinal LOL — Steve P.S. As far as good books that don’t put me to sleep go, Stephen King comes to mind. I like to read a lot of non-fiction too – especially anything written by Paul Kennedy, Lester Thurow, Daniel Yergin, Michio Kaku, etc. etc. They make otherwise boring topics exciting

Hi Amanda, I’m wondering if anyone has read "Girl, Interrupted" or if you have. Also any good books on the experiences of the bipolar. My sister, and my partner, and the three of us share a house, are bipolar, then here I go getting anxiety junk again. I’d really like to understand more of what they are going through…… thank God with this I always remember what is going on and can fight against my irrationalities….. they don’t always remember. David
Response:
Thanks for the great book recommendations everyone! And to David ~ I have been waiting and waiting and waiting ( patiently ) for "Girl Interrupted" to come out on video. I never even thought to see if there was a book. I always like to read the book first, before seeing the movie! As far as bipolar reading goes, in my original post I mentioned wanting to get the book " His Bright Light " by Danielle Steele. Danielle Steele is an author of romance, but the particular book I’m looking for, by her, is her real-life story about her son, who suffered from bipolar, manic depressive, he committed suicide at the age of 17, I believe. I’ve heard it is a very emotional story, but also inspirational and informational. I saw the book once at the grocery store, but I passed it up because it was too much $. Now I wish I hadn’t because I would really like to read it, and I can’t find it now. I need to get myself to the library! I don’t have bipolar, but I have suffered from depression and suicidal tendencies for years, and recently started having PA’s and anxiety, and a few minor phobias! I think "His Bright Light" would probably be a great book, Danielle Steele is a very good writer, I have read many of her romances. And I think you and your partner and roommate might get some information and understanding out of this book. Take care, Amanda
Response:
I am reading a really good book, ‘More Than You Know’ by Beth Gutcheon, it’s so good. It takes place in Maine and goes back and forth about two loves in the 1800’s and the depression era, it has a haunting part to it, ghosts(but now scary, really) and the story is just so well written. I am going to try to finish it tonight. Hope you pick it up, it just came out. Cheryl

Hi Dot, I don’t like books about Democrats. I don’t like what they say when they are on TV either. I’m getting sick of Republicans also. I think I’ll be an Independent. Is Ted Sorensen a Dane like you? His name sounds Swedish. Dot, you are a woman. Maybe you can answer a question for me. My sister-in-law likes to read lots of paperback books that have pictures on front of women with long hair being held in the arms of muscular men. Sort of like a rescue. Lots of times there is a castle in the background. One time I smiled at one of those books and ever since then she hides them so I can’t see her reading them. Why would a woman read such books? Is it a fantasy thing? Surely there must be something more worthwhile to pass time. My brother has big muscles and is nice looking. You would think women would be satisfied with what they have. But no, they always want something more! Chip ;-P~~ Before you buy.

Hi Amanda, I love any book by Stephen King or Dean Koontz. I’m more into the horror genre than anything else. I just started to read "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" by King. It’s more of a psychological horror than most of his books. You read the way I used to read. 2-3 books a week most of the time. I can’t seem to maintain that pace anymore. Enjoy your books!! Debby

Hi Amanda- I’m a dedicated bibliophile, but lately I haven’t had much time to read anything fun, I’ve been too busy doing research. On my night stand right now is Sotheby’s Bidding for Class, I love it, but its not for the majority. Did you know that the character James Bond was based on a gentleman who was a sotheby’s expert when S was located on Bond Street. Anything by Alice Hoffman, Sidney Sheldon, or Peter Mayle. Tom Robbins, Nelson Demille, James Patterson, Plutarch, Douglas Adams, Erica Jong, Henry Miller……the list goes on. Jess – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I am an avid, if not obsessive reader. If you know of any good books, or some great read recommendations, please share them with me! Chip
