Question:
I’ll never forget the words of the first psychiatrist I saw when I was all but debilitated with PD. I stated that I was concerned about becoming addicted to benzos and she responded "would you rather live your life as you are now or be dependant on a med with relief?" Ive never forgotten those words and now 11 years later I still take Klonopin only 0 – 1.0 mg/day and am doing well. IMO fear of medication is as bad as abuse of medication. Both can be deleterious. chuck

Hi Chuck, We need more doctors with that kind compassion. When I had to go on Paxil I was devastated, I felt weak. I told my MD how I felt and she asked if I was ashamed to take a med for my thyroid, and of course I am not, she told me there was no difference when it came to paxil. That meant the world to me. No judgement of me, just wanting the best for me. Jackie

Hi Chuck, When I saw my first doctor (the doctor who first told me about xanax, who first prescribed it and who made me feel guilty for needing it) I was left to wonder what to do when that script ran out. The time came and I was forced back to the clinic where I saw a different doctor. We discussed my anxiety attacks and I made some comment like, "Well, I know I can’t take xanax forever" (I was repeating what the first doctor had insinuated to me).He looked at me puzzled and said, "Why not, many people do and live perfectly full and anxiety free lives for it?" Now I don’t want to leave the impression that he talked me into taking meds, only that he was a kind and caring man who often called me at home to check on how I was doing….If I was feeling better and were there any side effects I felt that concerned me. I will never forget how much better I felt about my life and my future when leaving his office compared to the $200 doctor who made me feel worse than I had felt when I first walked into his office. Now, as my addressess change, so do my doctors. I have been fortunate to find that my caregivers know that I am not having "xanax parties" and even if they have concerns about benzos, once I explain my history and situation now, they listen and understand. It makes no sense to pretend that some people don’t need help in the form of a medicine. I do not condone drug abuse but this group is not abusive of their meds. We simply do what we need to do (legally and with the professional help of our doctors) to live full lives. little bear

About 2/3rds that have an anxiety/panic disorder don’t seek help for it, either not recognising it as being an unusual mind state, or not wanting the stigma that they perceive to exist. Sadly, many end up self medicating with alcohol, which can be much worse than any of the usual medications. And those that do seek help then have to contend, firstly with the pill phobia a lot of us get as a freebie with our GAD/OCD/PD/ PTSD/Phobia, and also with doctors who’ve been scared into an even bigger case of the worse phobia of all – benzo phobia. And when they come here, they have to run the troll gauntlet. <SIGH Are benzos the best med for everyone, no! But sometimes they are for an individual!! Zu
