Any advice anyone can give on whether to consider E-Therapists

Question:

Hello, This is a second post only because I have this habit of choosing bad titles that end up (I’m guessing) looking like spam (so people ignore them). I am trying to get other people’s opinions on E-Therapists (as an option for someone who is having anxiety problems that may not be comfortable with ‘traditional’ therapy.) Has anyone had any experience or contact at all with any E-Therapists? Thanks!

A RL therapist is always a better option IMO. What is the reason your friend can’t work with one? (I’m talking CBT here, which *is* available online, try a Google search) Philip

Response:

What the heck is an "E" therapist?

I would say probably mostly the high anxiety level and the idea of dealing with a new person who is unknown, especially to have to dump personal problems onto this unknown person. Adding to that the typical complication of just finding someone that will work out is another issue, I think. (I’m talking CBT here, which *is* available online, try a Google search)

I’ve seen comments regardint this. I’m unfamilar with that. Do you have any good links related to this? I guess that it seemed that the E-Therapist idea was a good compromise between just getting some anxiety tapes and actually going to a therapist in person.

A therapist who treats you by email. Is (s)he on any meds for the anxiety? Sometimes we need to take medication to calm dowm somewhat to the point of being able to see a therapist. Every therapist is familiar with the initial uneasiness clients show. It’s common. It will work beter. Maybe it can be. I live in Holland. The University of Amsterdam ran a trial of E-therapy for PTSD which was remarkably successful. They are currently conducting a similar trial for agoraphobia. Philip

Not regularly. Herbal stuff and then as needed. This person believes that meds (from another illness) may have started this whole thing so is reluctant to use anxiety meds regularly. medication to calm dowm somewhat to the point of being able to see a therapist. So, there are studies of legitimate e-therapy that have been effective? Do you know how to determine if a certain group (and person) is legitimate? Thanks for all the replies and info… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Philip

*Herbal stuff* is also medicine (but without the research and guaranteed about pureness and dosage that come with prescription meds)… and many meds are derived from herbs. What meds and illness are you talking about? The sparse info you give makes it difficult to assess anything except that "this person" doesn’t want to meet a RL therapist or take medication. Can’t this person himself/herself come online or doesn’t (s)he have internet access? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -medication to calm dowm somewhat to the point of being able to see a therapist. I think I could if I would see the info…  but IMO it’s *not* the best choice. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

I agree. Anyone who uses herbal stuff is left with the responsibility of affirming safety and correct dosage. What meds and illness are you talking about? Sorry if things have been too general. A (physical) health issue included surgeries and the use of painkillers (morphine in the hospital for instance) and steroids which seem to have created a long term effect. Regarding postings–it’s due to the public nature of newsgroups and such. You know how it is. Sorry if things have been too general. Is there other information I should include? medication to calm dowm somewhat to the point of being able to see a therapist. Every therapist is familiar with the initial uneasiness clients show. I think I posted yesterday in the same timeframe as you did, so there is another post out there that I submitted before seeing the current one from you. Basically, the question was regarding whether any sites have directional guidance. I was trying to get any idea of what you meant by "available online." Were you meaning just the basic information, or a guided approach for self directed CBT? I checked out the sites a bit. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve seen comments regardint this. http://www.etherapistsonline.com/ I agree that in person is probably the best way to go but I’m curious as to whether this can be a legitimate alternative for those who aren’t ready for the in person approach or who are just more comfortable ‘writing’ someone than talking. Thanks!

(Did a little bit of link checking/browsing now, sooo:) what do you mean by "*is* available online"? Do you mean that this person can go and read about CBT and do this on their own? Or do you mean there is something/someone there to guide a person? Or is there some guided track for them to follow? Or? Thanks! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Philip

There are therapists who will work with you online by way of email. I don’t have the URL’s ready as I never saved them but you could type in *CBT online* or something like that at Google anbd see what comes up. E-therapists will of course ask for payment too. RL therapy would be preferable IMO. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –
