Question:
Welcome to ASAP RD, I definitely have several of the symptoms that you display. Especially the chest discomfort, heart pounding, and skin crawling are indications of my anxiety increasing. I’ve learned to recognize when my anxiety is beginning by my lightheadedness and disorientation. IMO you should see a Dr. and have a physical first. Then you can go from there and get help in controlling your symptoms. Good Luck. Debby

Tingling, sharp pains, lightheadedness, chest discomfort, indigestion, lump in my throat, feelings that something is going to happen to me right now, feelings of unreality, skin crawling, heart pounding, smothering feeling, when I drive- i’m not sure if I’m going to make it,can’t watch the news or read the papers, because I get too depressed about anyone being sick or dead, and the worst for me , the heart palpitations. I would like to hear from anyone if they have any sypmtoms that I am experiencing. Thank you.

All the symptoms you mention arze familiar to most PD-sufferers so welcome to the club! What you should do is have a complete physical to rule out possible other causes (but I’m sure you suffer from an anxiety disorder) and then see a psychiatrist specialized in anxiety disorders (if there is an anxiety clinic linked to a university hospital in your area that’s almost always a good bet) and have yourself prescribed some meds. The sooner this disorder gets treated the better your chances are. Please keep us posted! Philip

Back in 1995, I had serious problems in my life. I knew that it would be over soon, but I couldn’t cope with the situation. Then one day, I heard something about this thing called St. John’s Wort. So, I, knowing what it could do for you, started taking it. About 2 weeks later, I started feeling better. I wasn’t having the anxiety attacks that I was having, wasn’t so depressed and I felt overall less "doomed". I would suggest you try St. John’s Wort. I am browsing this newsgroup because I am having problems trying to cope with what is becoming a perpetual college career (I can’t pass a class). This situation is driving me crazy and I can’t cope with it anymore… isn’t 10 years enough? I will be taking more St. John’s Wort in order to reduce my symptoms of feeling helpless, anxious, and doomed. Because maybe, just maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel. All my best, Mike

I suspect that many of us here have at least some of the symptoms you mention. My diagnosis is PTSD, and while I don’t have some of the physical symptoms that people with PD experience, I can relate. I particularly have trouble driving or being in a car (I think it’s dizziness combined with hypervigilence), being in public with a lot of people, especially those I do not know, and also have discomfort watching the news when death is the most common topic of the day. I do not see how doing so adds to my life, so I don’t do it, and opt to get my news online, etc. where I can be more selective. I often avoid the news altogether for short periods of time, as many homeopaths suggest. you are not alone! take care, Renee "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." – Abraham Lincoln

All of the symptoms you have listed are common to people with panic/anxiety disorders. None of them are fatal, they just sometimes feel like they are. There are plenty of different meds that help: beta blockers (Tenorman, Lopressor, etc.) , benzodiazopines (Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, etc.), and tons of antidepressents that can help. There’s also cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Consistant aerobic exercise (running, swimming laps, etc.) for 30+ mins/day, 5 days a week is also very helpfull for most people. The symptoms that I’ve experienced include: palpitations, racing heart, awareness of heart beat, lump in the throat feeling, anxiety (lots), numbness in my hands, strong shakes, visual distortions, trouble sleeping, diareah, upset stomach, ocular migraine, and a few more I can’t think of at the moment. If you haven’t been to a Dr., get to one, especially if you can find one that is experienced with panic/anxiety. God bless, Mark Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

TO: People that have anxiety (particularly those that have GAD) exactly what type of symtoms do you have?? What do you call anxiety symptoms?? Mine = a hot, red, sore face (the nose in particular) and vision problems–without meds – throw in light-headedness. People who suffer from "generalized anxiety" (not panic attacks) rarely describe their symptoms. Please do. Thanks in advance Chief

Dear Chief, Nice to here from someone with GAD! When it hits me, I feel this funny sensation, like a knot in my stomach, but not. It’s like I know somethings wrong but I can’t figure it out. Also I get this fight or flight reaction. If I’m out I feel that I have to get away from where I am (this can happen at home also), but I don’t know where I want to go. I kind of shut down when I get anxious, which I think frustrates (confuses) my husband (who is GREAT!), I kind of freeze in my tracks, get the deer in the headlights feeling. Also, I can have paranoid tendancies, which is what the meds are good on cutting down on, (also the bingeating thing, but noone else out there seems to relate to that) I have had stress related symptoms that lasted months, throat constriction, heart palpitations, stomach and colon stuff. WOW. this sounds really horrible, most of the time I’m a generally satisfied person, that other’s would never suspect this stuff is going on. Gretchen

<snip For me it’s in the legs. A feeling of extreme restlessness, amd a deep feeling of foreboding – like something is about to happen. I feel like I need to run, but I don’t know where. I’ve actually tried running but it didn’t help! "Andy Worhol got it wrong, "don’t quote me" 15 minutes is too long" – tism -me
