alt.dissociation.discussion

Question:

The name "alt.dissociation.discussion" would invite skeptics, so I would expect this would be a more freewheeling and contentious, less supportive group than one designated for "support."  Which is fine if that’s what you want. — For more information about this service, send e-mail to:

Comments: The newsgroup I’m proposing relates to open discussion (general and personal) of dissociation as a medical condition and its effects on those who have this condition. The newsgroup is meant to be used by those who share this condition as well as those who have loved ones who are dissociative.

The name alt.dissociation.discussion wouldn’t work anyway, because it creates a new second-level hierarchy. I agree that the name was ill-chosen for the conception of the new group. It was discussed in alt.config where to place the group as far as hierarchy; the alt.med.* and alt.support.* hierarchies were mentioned, but what was ultimately agreed on as probably the best-suited name to most closely fit the goals of the proposal was alt.recovery.dissociation. It has occasionally been mentioned that if people find the constraints of asdis difficult in their attempts to communicate, they should perhaps consider other groups to meet their needs. The replies to this has been that there _are_ no other groups about dissociation. Soon, hopefully, there will be. Like I said earlier, I hadn’t meant for discussion of this new group to take place in asdis, but unfortunately one of the replies to my proposal was crossposted here. This isn’t about encouraging people to stamp off in a huff. Laurie — I was driving around in the middle of nowhere, but I had to keep going. I like to live on the edge.

The newsgroup is meant to be used by those who share this condition as well as those who have loved ones who are dissociative. For your newsgroups file: alt.dissociation-discussion. Open discussion of dissociation. Charter: General and personal open discussion of dissociation and related topics, primarily among people who are dissociative. Justification of Readership: The specific subject of dissociation is currently covered by only one newsgroup — alt.support.dissociation — which creates difficulties, because of the wide range of manifestations of this condition. A substantial number of regular and occasional posters to alt.support.dissociation have indicated an interest in creating a newsgroup that is less constricting and judgemental; a large number of posts to that group are arguments over whether certain areas of discussion are appropriate, because they may trigger or otherwise upset more fragile posters, quite a few of whom are MPD. This is frustrating, to say the least, for those posters whose needs fall in these "inappropriate" areas, such as reclamation of one’s sexuality, a topic that is highly controversial in alt.support.dissociation and has in recent months been an area that many posters have a strong desire for communication about, but have been basically shamed for doing so. Other discussions that have hampered communication have involved continual pressure for people to be "nice," yet vicious personal attacks (on some people) are tolerated (by some people) if those attacks are "an expression of one’s feelings." Many of us in the newsgroup believe that understanding another person’s feelings is not the same thing as giving that person carte blanche to say abusive things that could deeply hurt someone. There is a huge rift in this newsgroup, and people who feel silenced and shamed are in desperate need of somewhere they can speak without feeling that they have to walk on eggshells to be accepted. Thank you for your consideration.

Any additional groups should be in the alt.support.dissociation.* hierarchy [Groups should be in sub-hierarchies with related groups] — Jonathan Grobe For millions of used, out-of-print and collectable books try: Advanced Book Exchange: <http://www.abebooks.com Bibliofind: <http://www.bibliofind.com

But part of the point is that a new group is needed that is not locked into the current conventional view of ‘’support.” Indeed, a narrow definition of support is often used in the existing group(s) to suppress open discussion. Since dissociation and PTSD and the like are medical conditions (both conditions and symptoms, according to current thinking), maybe the .med hierarchy IS worth considering. — Jonathan Grobe For millions of used, out-of-print and collectable books try: Advanced Book Exchange: <http://www.abebooks.com Bibliofind: <http://www.bibliofind.com

While that was my initial reaction as well, I think the major difference between this group and ASD is that this is *not * expected to be a support group, although living-with issues are bound to come up.
