Well, thank goodness you said so, I was wondering!! :) Sara

Thank you very much for taking all that time to construct this detailed explanation. I DO appreciate it and printed all 8 pages for future reference. Have to go to a college open house for child #3. I am having a minor heart attack with the thought of all 3 in college at the same time $$$$$. Jan

Me too again, but since I haven’t yet read it, I don’t know how much of it applies to those who are not using Agent?  Netscape has a pretty lousy filtering system (in fact, even AOL’s is better):  it doesn’t appear to let me filter an entire domain from the path line, which I think is the only way to get rid of all Altopia posts? > Have to go to a college open house for child #3. You mentioned Hofstra once — I have been meaning to ask you about it for a very long time, and just keep forgetting.  They are supposed to have a fairly decent theatre program — do you have any knowledge?  How is it stacking up compared to the other colleges you know? — Misleading info about TS published by Jankovic in NEJM http://tourettenowwhat.tripod.com/JankovicNEJM.htm

it’s hard to manage a big train of thought like that by yourself while keeping it relevant without making a whole cacophony of errors and screwing up a fundamental things here and there and everywhere. human nature. go figure. different if i was writing a book or something more permanent on the subject, but i was just initiating something that will no doubt get lost in the google machine a month from now, but it needed to be presented, cos i’ve been around Usenet and the forums some have reaped a lot of info. in the process and have pursued the many aspects of filtering to extract what i want out of it better. So i was just sharing that some. There is a bunch more i could say re filtering, but some other time perhaps. — If a pervert exposes himself in a forest and noone is around to see it, is it still rude behavior?

well understood. — If a pervert exposes himself in a forest and noone is around to see it, is it still rude behavior?

I don’t really have any knowledge about the theatre program. Sorry. My son is liberal arts/undeclared, at the moment. He is having a tough adjustment period, though. He stayed for the first full weekend this past weekend. He likes it better at home, he says. Oh well, hopefully, he’ll do well academically, which is the main purpose. We only live about 90 miles away, but that Belt Parkway is the worst! An hour and 1/2 trip takes over 3 hours on a Friday.

Thanks, Jan … I hope things settle down for him.  Since you have other children, I imagine you’ve already read the book, "Letting Go," about adapting to sending them off to college? — Tourette Syndrome – Now What? http://tourettenowwhat.tripod.com

Nope, but will look for it. Thanks. One more to send off after this one. Jan

I constructed this very hastily. and i don’t have all day. (the mold is taking over my kitchen) so, upon review, i just realized it is so full of holes and horrendous mistakes that might make my explanation of these filters seem contradictory. But i meant for it to initiate some questions that might be much more circumstantial. It’s hard to construct complex filters that are too hypothetical. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -On Sun, 06 Oct 2002 05:15:13 GMT, Grrr <grr…@AMpost.com> wrote: >i’ll just do this in great detail the once for all you dumb folk (like >i once was) >despite the subject, first i’ll go through and explain the headers >fields i detail and enlighten you some on what (i think) it all means. >so i right click a message i have opened and select "show all headers >fields" in the pop up menu. >>Path: news.easynews.com!newsfeed1.easynews.com!easynews.com!easynews!nntp2.aus1.g iganews.com!nntp.giganews.com!wn12feed!wn11feed!wn7feed!worldnet.att.net!12 8.230.129.106!news.maxwell.syr.edu!newsgate.netvigator.com!imsp212.netvigat or.com!not-for-mail >each of these are the headers is giving details about the computer >settings concerning the messages’ origin. >this one says that the message can be traced back to the server >>imsp212.netvigator.com >then it had to be passed onwards to each of these Network news >transfer (NNTP) hubs; >>newsfeed1.easynews.com!easynews.com!easynews!nntp2.aus1.giganews.com!nntp .giganews.com!wn12feed!wn11feed!wn7feed!worldnet.att.net!128.230.129.106!ne ws.maxwell.syr.edu!newsgate.netvigator.com >before it could reach; >>news.easynews.com >the news server which i downloaded it from >but this doesn’t account for the fact that i might download through an >anon NNTP proxy, use an anon remailer, or that someone wasn’t >telneting to an open news server via a proxy chain onto which the >message was deposited and sent >>From: xnt…@relax.cm >this is the from address (duh) >now the above is just a conventional field, built into the design of >the your newsreader program. so it is only pointing to a field in the >software you are using, not at all where the message is coming from or >how it has arrived. >an anon remailer will strip something like this from a message >or you could use a program like ghost mailer(i think it is called) and >telnet to an news host and deliver it into the news feed. >or you could use any number of UNIX or Linux progs. and design your >own fields; the realm of hacker stuff; etc. >but the from field in your settings (in contrast to the "reply to" >field) may conveniently be quoted by a newsreader, >so we might anti-SPAM it, in case any folk out there are running a >-bot program that scans through newsgroups and compiles just a raw >list of E-Addresses, then selling these lists to the advertisers, >thusly: >>From: SPxnt…@AMrelax.cm >this means that if the "relax.com" were a valid server, rather than >forcing this server to process all the SPAM messages that are being >sent to this null address upon that server, like this example would; >>From: SPAMxnt…@relax.cm >we are giving an invalid server address, plus i feel that someone need >only put a routine in these bot to take this convention of inserting >SPAM into a message and write a simple routine that removes the word >"SPAM" or "NO SPAM" or maybe even capital letters from the address. >It’s up to you, but that’s just my $.02 >>Newsgroups: alt.support.tinnitus,alt.support.tourette,alt.support.trauma-ptsd >the list of newsgroups the message is being posted across. >if you want to reply to a message, so that the replies to your message >only go to say; >>Newsgroups: alt.support.tinnitus,alt.support.tourette >except for in the more dumbed down news readers which do not have this >function, you might insert; >>alt.support.tinnitus,alt.support.tourette >into the followup-to: field, whose field and other fields, when you’re >compiling a post, can be accesses by "CTRL+D" >Sometimes i’ve put the follow up as; >>alt.support,tinnitus,alt.support.tourette >changing the full stop into a comma to trip people up who might not >think to look at the  header field and only notice that the newsgroups >field has changed. >as there is no such group as just alt.support or tinnitus >>Subject: Executive Chair with LIFETIME WARRANTY !! >all newsreader i gather can filter the subject.
