Response:

Hi Kris, Thanks for the suggestions.  I’ve tried catnip tea, lemon verbena, kavakava, chamomile tea, alfalfa tea.  Had my own regular herb garden last year, tried all the calming herbs, lavendar in my pillow case, hops in my pillowcase. Kavakava worked wonderful, but couldn’t take it for too long, because it made me throw up blood.  Then I read in an herbal book that smoking catnip was very relaxing.  It is, tastes like doo-doo, but hey, if it works, it works.  And it’s certainly cheaper than the other!  LOL! I’m keeping my eyes peeled on the post about valerian elixir.  That’s something I’ve not tried, so I’m very keen to find out how it works for others. Thanks Kris. kat "BaliKris" <balik…@aol.comzipspam> wrote in message

Actually a great sleep tea would be these ingredients, which you can buy in bulk at a health food store: roman chamomile catnip valerian root (and a couple others I forget but can look up if someone needs it, just email me) the herbs are pretty cheap and you don’t get the hangover like OTC (I would be hungover from Tylenol PM but not from the "heavier" drugs the doc prescribed, go figure. If you are interested, get a bit of each herb and mix it up, stick it in a tea ball and brew a pot.  If it isn’t tasty, add honey, sugar, cream, whatever floats your boat.  Part of the tea working (I think) is the pattern of use. Kind of like your body realizes that its time to RELAX and the herbs help.  The herbs are way cheaper than those pills of melatonin or valerian or kava kava. My doctor suggested Valerian Elixir 6 drops  at night for sleep.  I saw this mentioned in one of the posts about sleep but I can’t figure out how to post in the middle of a thread on google.  Is there any information out there? Right now I take desyrel for sleep it seems to work okay but I have trouble with sleep meds in that while they seem to be taking effect I go through a period of anxiety then I seem to relax.  Has anyone had this with sleep meds? Janna

Response:

I’ve never heard of anyone taking desyrel for sleep before??  I was surprised to see the name, because that’s the first anit depressant I took, over fifteen years ago.  The only thing I really remember about it was when I was taking it no one told me to stay out of the sun.  So I’d been outside, sunning myself and nearly had heat stroke.  I got so dizzy, breathless, heart racing, could barely crawl inside and then laid on the floor for a long time.  Anyone else ever heard of this?  I take xanax to sleep, been taking it for that reason for a long time now and don’t have any trouble with it.  My doctor had me try Melatonin but it didn’t do a thing for me. I’ve heard of valerian as an ingredient in some herbal sleep remedies, but so far none have worked well for me.  Can’t speak for anyone else, they might work in your case.  I use other herbal type things that I’ve had great success with, but I think I’m way to anxious for the herbal sleep remedies. tiny dancer "janna ryan" <jannar…@hotmail.com> wrote in message

Don’t know what else to call it.> Me too, and I think it has something to do with the hypervigilance and how medication overrides it, causing a bit of anxiety at the same time. To put it another way, its like the medication is there, relaxing me, but a bit of hypervigilance kicks in, almost like a revolt or a reaction to the power of medication.  I’ve had this and never really thought about it. Thanks for bringing it up. Kristine The unexamined life is not worth living – Socrates

I read a lot about Valerian on some herbal websites before I tried it. Unfortunately for me, even at the highest recommended dose, it did nothing for me. I have a friend, though( who doesn’t have ptsd), who gets knocked out by the lowest dose. > Right now I take desyrel for sleep it seems to work okay but I have > trouble with sleep meds in that while they seem to be taking effect I > go through a period of anxiety then I seem to relax.  Has anyone had > this with sleep meds?

I’ve used imovane (zopiclone) and it works well, no anxiety while it takes effect. Hope this helps. Hannah

Thanks everybody, I’ve felt like this too. When I was self-medicating with alcohol I didn’t experience any anxiety but paid a terrible price the next day, I quit when I found out liquor exacerbates depression. Then I used a better substance, hangover-wise, but it’s illegality made me anxious and I kept running out of chocolate chip cookies:-). OTC sleep meds made me feel drugged when I woke up, so I can’t use them either. I’ve yet to try melatonin, valerian, or any of the herbal teas promoting sleep, but I plan to as soon as I get some money. Hypervigilance is definitely one of the symptoms that keeps me awake (makes me an extra safe driver, though:-). BroVet

Bro Vet, Hemp or catnip smoked calms me down a lot.  But know what you mean about the chocolate chip cookies!  LOL!  Oh well, whatever works.  Strange feeling, pushing 40 years old, and smoking marijuana.  God, it’s embarrassing!  But sometimes, it’s the only thing that calms me down. kat "Bro Vet" <HermanoVetr…@webtv.net> wrote in message
