Question:
We hear all the Talk about PTSD, and it being a Soldier’s disease… I wonder just how many actually are Soldiers, and how many just have come from Abusive homes as Children, or Raped, or something which turns into the Flashbacks? Does anyone have the numbers comparing them all? Also, I know people who suffer from Depression and such are afraid to go get Help for this… I wonder how many people should be Diagnosed with PTSD but are afraid to say anything… due to not wanting to be called "Mentally ILL." Just some things to think about… But if anyone can give me some insight on this, this would help. ~~TINA~~
Response:
In actuality there are far greater numbers of people from abusive upbringings with PTSD then survivors of war situations with PTSD simply because there is small percentage of people who have been in war situations compared to vast number of people who have grown up in an abusive manner. I dont have any actual numbers but some experts today will readily tell you that the incidence of moderate or severe PTSD is much higher than a lot of people want to consider. It gets underdiagnosed to some extent because some clinicians don’t understand or believe in it….also it may be much harder to get treatment paid for by insurance if PTSD is diagnosed when more insurance reimbursable type diagnoses can be focused on. There is still stigma to being labeled mentally ill and also a huge one to being labeled a VICTIM.
