Question:
triggered for talk of ECT Hi – we don’t post here very much. sometimes we read the postings, when we aren’t too overwhelmed. in addition to DID, we are also dx’d with PTSD & major depression we first started treatment for depression when the body was 13 years old, so we’ve been battling it for 24 years now. we have had 7 hospitalizations. Our depression does not respond consistently well to medication. currently we are on wellbutrin, prozac, remeron, neurontin, serzone, and seroquel. that combo has been working for about 6 months, but now we can feel ourselves falling into the abyss. 2 years ago we got a second opinion, and the doc recommended ECT. at the time, we told him absolutely not, and didn’t think any more of it. it has now come up again in the course of treatment. we don’t know what to think about it. some stuff we reads makes it sound ok, and other stuff makes it sound horrific. we work a fulltime job, and so we are mostly concerned with the memory loss and cognitive impairment. also, we don’t have any family or anyone to look after us if we develop temporary mental confusion. so, we are just wondering if any of you know anything about ECT, or if you’ve had the treatment, and how it was for you dodge city
Response:
Hello – Welcome, in case we haven’t spoken before (as, in my recollection, we have not). That sounds like quite an incredible mixture you’re on! I haven’t any personal experience w/the treatment you mention, but I do know that in at least one case that I know of, someone who was almost immobile w/depression was brought back to a completely normal life. Of course, there are less positive stories out there, too, I know. Just thought I’d throw in the one definite one I know about for sure.
