Alan, do you all have an apprenticeship program somewhere. This laddie needs it badly if he is going to hang out on usenet when he grows up. I would make sure he has a sig file saying, I am an apprentice, I am an apprentice, I am not a journeyman so people don’t get the wrong impression. It is not all his fault you know, he is from a state that recently elected a dead senator to serve in Washington D.C., I think they are all kind of fruit loops.

You would be absolutely amazed at what he could do to Kcom too if he got pissed off enough. I have known him for years, and if there is anyone I would rather not mess with on usenet in about 7 years of posting, it is Don. he,he though, it looks like Kcom has not been to the glanmore.org site to look at the waterpump addition.

Yes it does get better. Yes it does go away. >A bit better?…. a lot better?
It took me a long time to feel even a little bit better, then I started making rapid progress in a very short period of time. Now, most of the time, I don’t show any symptoms of PTSD except under extremely stressful situations. Good luck Risa Whenever I wake up on top of the mattress, I know I’m getting up on the right side of the bed.

Hey Screwloose; Welcome to life after trauma. My answer is no and no. What you can do, though, is learn to live with it. You can even learn to live quite well. I’ve actually been able to convince a few people that I am a human being. You have just now taken a step in the right direction. Getting input and support from others is very helpful because the task ahead is not easy or simple. Some minor but important changes have occurred in your brain. Those changes make it a little tricky to sort out your thoughts and feelings and they explain the "peaks of hyper-vigilance and anger… to troughs of dazed and exhaustion". Hang around a while and maybe see if you can buddy up with someone in your community who would be willing to hear you out and help you sift through your thoughts and feelings. That sure goes a long way toward figuring out which thoughts and feelings to work with and which ones to toss. nice to meet you Steve "screwloose" <mami…@telstra.com> wrote in message

Its never easy watching someone get shot, it is even harder when you have to shoot them. But there are things worse. You most likely are not going to listen to me, but I think it was Joseph Waumbagh who wrote the Onion Field. You should be able to pick it up used for a buck or so. Force yourself to read it. It will do at least three things. 1.) Show you how this stuff unfolds. 2.) Make you wonder what you would have done, then and in your circumstance and now. 3. See what the survivor did then and now (or at least when the book was finished) It is a true story. Joseph Wambaugh is no chump, he was a working detective long before he started writing and he knows about these things, but I doubt they called it PTSD when that particular book was written (70’s if I remember) Life sucks, it isn’t fair, you either play the hand your dealt or it plays you. But don’t be a victim. Attack.

A person learns to live with it by recognizing its features and how to minimize the effect. Sometimes, if you know what is behind your reaction you can head it off. But there are times that even when a person KNOWS what is happening there is only the reaction. > >A bit better?…. a lot better? > >screwloose > No…The best you can do is buy a gun… > Steve

Response:
hi S.L. Ignore the trolls…I think you know who they are by their responses (ie. don’t buy a gun!
As for whether it gets "better" – there’s no one answer. The best answer I have seen is that there is "coping". We learn how to live with the symptoms, whether it’s medication to control some of the symptoms or we arrange our lives to accomodate others. Professional help – as soon as possible – is imperative in limiting the severity of PTSD and contiued support helps you work through or learn to cope with the symptoms. There is a process – you’re not stuck in the valley of the roller coaster forever. If there is a will, there’s a way. By the sounds of it you have a grip on some of the problems that still plaque me even after seven years – for example – I still can’t properly feed myself. (The microwave is my god
A bit better? Definitely. A lot better? A definite possibility. Completely better? Maybe when you learn how to completely cope with and manage the symptoms and go back to a normal ‘functioning’ life. Stick around and chat with the regulars – you’ll see soon enough who they are – Nancy, Helski, Rudolph, Balikris, tiny dancer, Risa, Kat, (Cloud Dreamer which is my other nick that I’m trying to shed) and a few others have been here for some time – they can offer a wealth of advice and information that will make you feel like you’re not alone, you’re not cracking up – that you’re going through a totally normally reaction. There’s some information and links at the FAQ as well – the link is listed below. take care chech View the AST-PTSD FAQ @ http://astpfaq.tripod.com/astpfaq/ In article <3f14ttk0t4uja0k1uomfn7iehepgs76…@4ax.com>, screwloose says… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Does it ever get better? Response:
It’s hard to tell lately who’s posting for help and who’s just posting to cause problems. It’s not usually like this so I’m taking a chance you’re a "real" person. You haven’t mentioned if you’re in therapy or just seeing someone for meds? From what I’ve heard it never really goes away, it gets better but one has to be careful of stressful situations because they can cause relapse. Take little steps forward as best you can. With the right meds and some good therapy you can reclaim your life for the most part. Since you said you haven’t had ptsd since childhood you’ve probably got a much better than average chance. From what I understand the longer it’s left untreated the worse it gets. For myself, I had a major breakdown about 10 years ago after some pretty life changing occurrences and quite a few major stresses not the least being a child with a life threatening disease. But I have suffered from major depression since early childhood due to severe abuse. Stick with your meds., try to unstress your life as much as you can, if you aren’t seeing a therapist try to find one to talk to. I’m on pretty strong doses of meds, but in the last year I’ve come a long way, in a big part because of this group (before it was overtaken by thoughtless people who don’t care who or how much they hurt others in their quest to get even). I’ve gone from not leaving my house even to get the mail in for about 5 years….. to occasionally driving myself to a friends house all alone. It may not sound like much but to somebody who was totally housebound it’s a major accomplishment. So what I’m trying to say is if proper care can get me out of the house I’m sure you can hope to do quite a bit better than that in a lot less time. Try not to let all these "extra people" here right now scare you off. Post your concerns, questions, feelings here and there will be people to help you with them. Best wishes, tiny dancer "screwloose" <mami…@telstra.com> wrote in message
