Question:
Nikki, I’ve recently had to go over to Prozac having been on cipramil for over a year. In the time that I was taking the Cipramil I put on over 3 stones in weight (over 42 lbs), and I found that its effectiveness was wearing off quite rapidly nearer to the end that I used it. However once I changed to Prozac it took some time for it to become effective as with most drugs of these types. But over time and with an increased dose (I’m now taking 60mg per day) so far it has suited me very well. I’m calmer than I have been for a long time, so much so that until 3 days ago my nurse had to go with me to the gym (because exercise releases endorphines and makes you feel good for a few hours) that i went to the gym for the first time on my own and again today. I’m certainly not saying that this is all down to the Prozac but it has certainly helped. You have to remember that any particular drug regimen may not be good for you, but that doesn’t mean to say that something else will also be no good. My advice would be to try it and wait and see. 10mg is a low dose but if it doesn’t work at that dosage, try it a little higher. There is a lot of scare mongering about SSDIs but it has made me think that if I had a broken limb would I refuse to wear a cast to repair it. Simplistic I know but that’s how I view it, which helps me to understand what is going on. Cheers, Cas "Hubert Sibley" <celes…@bellsouth.net> wrote in message

Hi, it’s Nikki again. thank you too the person who wrote me back about my cousin. This time I was hoping to get some advice about myself. I’ve been on Paxil for a little over a year now. It’s helped as for as not relasping. But my doctor wants to switch me to prozac because he is worried on how I am still reacting to the Paxil. On the Paxil I’ve been sleeping excessive amouts for the past year, the drowsy symptom never seemed to go away. I’ve been fired from like 6 different jobs in the past year because I can’t get out of bed. So ovbiously thhis has depressed me, I’ve gained 30 lbs in the last couple months. I’m still isolated and have no motivation to do anything for the past few years, and even though I lowered my dosage I still caan’t get out of bed. What do you guys think of prozac? He’s going to put me on a low dosage of 10 mg and see how I do. Since prozac is like the most controversial drug out there, I’m really nervous. Please give me some input if you can. Thank you. Oh, and also, how do I go about applying for the SSDI? Can I do it online? Thanks Nikki

Nikki Everyone responds differently to different meds (YMMV) – that’s why there are so many to choose from. Don’t let the bad press about prozac scare you. Prozac was simply the first of a new (and IMO, a better) type of anti-depressant – the SSRI. So, like almost anything, the bad got the press and the good got ignored. Paxil seems to be famous for losing its effectiveness after a period of time. If you are sleeping as much as you say then changing meds might be a good idea. It’s all trial and error and it could take months to find the AD that works for you. I took prozac for three years. While it helped with depression and some PTSD symptoms like flashbacks, I gained over 50 lbs on the drug. I changed to effexor and found it had the same benefits and I was able to slow my weight gain. Last December I switched to Wellbutrin after I was laid up with a knee injury. Since I could not even go for a walk I was afraid my weight would explode. Wellbutrin is one of the few ADs that has weight loss as a side-effect – so much so that anorexics can’t take it. Now that my knee has been fixed (almost) I’m able to do some activities and have actually lost 10 lbs – although I’ve had to work on it. Simply stopping the med that put the weight on won’t mean that the weight will come off by itself. So, don’t let changing meds scare you. Most SSRIs take up to eight weeks to become effective and initial side-effects that may make you want to stop usually wear off after a couple weeks. Wellbutrin stopped me cold for three days straight with flu-like symptoms – it was horrid but knowing that these effects were short term made me tough it out. The side-effects only lasted about two weeks and weren’t that bad once the "flu" went away. Prozac increased my anxiety level for the first few weeks. Anyway, enough rambling. Check out the Internet Mental Health site I listed in the other thread. It can give you a list of the drugs and the side-effects that you might experience. And always remember – YMMV. .. P.S. No idea about SSDI. Je suis canadienne.
