Bad dreams

Question:

Does anyone ever suffer from bad dreams/nighmares, in a down state that are so bothersome you can’r shake them the next day and then it just repeats itself again and again ???? why is this????? Please no flames, just some caring, responses or advic please.

I am really sorry that I don’t have any good advice for you, gosh I wish I did. I just wanted to tell you that I too have severe nightmares when I start to get down. It is own of the first signs of my crashing and it stinks. I’m sorry you go through that too. Mary Beth p’ed and e’d

Response:

I have bad dreams and often dream that something bad has happened to my children and I wake up leaping out of bed. Then of course realizing they are o.k. but finding it difficult to get back to sleep. It is certainly more effective than my alarm clock! They never affect me for long though and don’t repeat themselves. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Does anyone ever suffer from bad dreams/nighmares, in a down state that are so bothersome you can’r shake them the next day and then it just repeats itself again and again ???? why is this????? Response:

Yeah, I do.  Frequently have dreams of friends and relatives who are dead. Only in the dreams, they are alive again. Usually I am fighting or arguing with them. Sometimes they are accusing me of their death.  Really fucks with my head long after I wake up.

I have similar dreams where I dream that my grandmother (and sometimes mother) is alive and It’s always the same, I’m totally ecstatic that they’re not dead, and when I awake the disappointment is so immense it rips me to shreds  :( fuck! Michael

Of course is the answer to the first question.  Don’t know enough about the role of sleep and dreaming in human behavior yet is the answer to the second The above is for Victor/ Victoria.  .

Vickie Late response — real life took over my time… I have recurring nightmares and have for as long as I can remember. (Which is to say, all my life, since my memories extend into my first year…with the except of a blank in the early sixties.) I suspect the nightmares are the reason I don’t stay asleep today. When I start to dream, I wake up.  After about a week of waking up every 45-90 minutes, I’m so tired that I sleep through as much as three hours at a time.  Then I wake, knowing I’m scared to death, but not really knowing why. Sometimes I get very lucky and don’t wake up unable to breathe slowly, heart pounding, voice totally inoperative, and shaking.  Sometimes. Don’t know that I have much in the way of advice, but I can supply all the listening and sympathy you need.  Oh God, have I been there… The NyteBard The NyteBard http://members.aol.com/nytebard/index.htm http://members.aol.com/nytebard/index.html

Response:

yes, I have dreams of talking with dead relatives also and recurrent dream themes.  I am also on an anti-depressive medications that has enabled me to recover from severe chemical depression.  I aksed my dr. if my medication could cause these wierd dreams–he said yes but I still don’t know.   I dearly love my dead relatives and know I miss them in real life.  Maybe there is a connection there. I also dream I am telling people off very eloquently which in real life I cannot do.  Trouble is, the people I tell off in my dreams are not the people I am mad at.  Figure that one out! I also have horrible nightmares where our country is being nuclear attacked and someone is coming up the stairs to get me when I am in bed.  I don’t have those fears in real life, either, so figure those out, also. If you want to correspond, I would like to compare.  Your friend,

Wow, I have those dreams too, scares the crap out of me but I have repeat dreams, or rather nightmares over and over again. Mary Beth

Response:

I am having them nearly every nite now.  Anybody else?  I am taking Effexor and Celexa right now, being weaned off of the fex and been on the Celexa only a week.  But the dreams have been getting progressively worse since last October. It could, of course, be med-related, but it could equally likely not be.  I say this because I haven’t been on meds regularly for something like 2 years, and I have these periods of *very* intense dreams, sometimes bad but more often just really weird and intense, and it seems sort of cyclical.  That is, it’s worse in general when things are not so good, and tends to lessen when things improve.  ANd I find them very disturbing.

I totally agree with you on this one. mine are like this too. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The only thing that I’ve found that helps at all is exercise, so that I’m physically pretty tired.  And the thing that does NOT help is anything that induces sleep, like Sonata or Trazodone, which seem to throw me immediately into exactly the wrong kind of sleep. I had them for a time…. had nothing to do with medications… wasn’t on any. I think it had something to do with what I was going through in my life at the time. thank god they are over (for now anyways). I don’t like them well. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Kaelwyn — The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not mov’d with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; The motions of his spirit are dull as night, And his affections dark as Erebus.  Let no such man be trusted. Response:

I don’t know about the meds but post traumatic stress can cause nightmares. For me it did. Last night I had a dream my former roomate was trying to kill me with a knife. Not good. Chris

Response:

…must be doing better than I thought! But then dreams have always been a very vivid and safe alternate reality for me. ***

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – sorry guys, but in my opinion, the dreams are symptoms of depression, not side effects of meds.  Some meds can cause vivid dreams, but if you’ve been having them a while, then the meds probably aren’t responsible. My pdoc asks me about my dreams every time I see him because he strongly believes dreams (and sleep in general) are a major indicator of how bad depression is. Sorry to bring bad news.  Then again, this is only my experience.  Yours might be different. Kylie. — "Yoda of Borg are we: Futile is resistance. Assimilate you, we will". I am having them nearly every nite now.  Anybody else? me! I just started taking effexor so it’s not because of that med. maybe the anafranil, edronax or buspar. I hope your dreams will get better. Linda, used to waking up worried and scared every morning

Response:

Have to agree with Kylie, had a bout with depression in 1997 due to a divorce, had horrible nightmares, was not on any meds at the time. Having another go with the depression due to job loss but not having the nightmares this time, sleeping good, just going crazy all day long. However I am using Paxil and exercise to try and stabilize and move on. Dan
