Question:
Oh, I apologize so much. I thought I was still in the alt.support.depression.manic board. They/we are mentally ill, afterall.
That’s ok. I’ve done things like that myself — like telling someone in alt.binaries.pictures.animals that they shouldn’t post pictures in the newsgroup! Thought I was in rec.pets.cats.health+behav. I actually do have a mental illness myself — depression — but I was still confuzzled. Priscilla — "As you get older, physical deterioration is offset by a larger world view and a deeper sense of gratitude." Diane Keaton
Response:
Actually, depression, bipolar disorder, and many illnesses that were formerly categorized as "mental" illnesses aren’t now. They’ve been found to have their origins in brain chemicals and are considered to be physical, neurochemical illnesses. (FWIW)
So aren’t a lot of mental illnesses. I have no problem with continuing to refer to depression as a mental illness. After all, it’s not a value judgement, just a fact. What *does* offend me is referring to the mental health clinic as "behavoriar health." I am NOT badly behaved — I am mentally ill! *sheesh* Priscilla — "As you get older, physical deterioration is offset by a larger world view and a deeper sense of gratitude." Diane Keaton

I have been on this newsgroup for at least five years. I lurk. I rarely post. I know there are only one or two people on this board that I read. If you have a question or if we can help (TK seems to be okay, some others, too but you will have to find out who they are), we sure will. Leave the other doggies alone. You will get your hand nipped.
[And someone named "Me" replied to "Val in Boise"] This newsgroup sometimes reminds me of a town in Stephen King’s Gunslinger series. Remember, however, they/we ARE mentally ill after all. Excuse me? You’re saying that migraine is a mental illness? Where did you get *that* from?
I think the writer is making a joke, Priscilla. However, if he/she is not, I’d like to hear a few references NOT including personal observations by the writer. Also, while I’m here, "Val in Boise" wrote, speaking of us at ASHM: "Leave the other doggies alone. You will get your hand nipped." I, for one, most heartily disagree. I have found the overwhelming majority of the people at ASHM to be quite civil. If you’ll look downthread, you’ll see she thought she was in another newsgroup where folks are mentally ill. Some of us are here, too, but, well… Priscilla — "As you get older, physical deterioration is offset by a larger world view and a deeper sense of gratitude." Diane Keaton

Actually, there IS an alt.support.depression.manic board, and there IS a TK who posts there. I’m all for Val’s having made an honest mistake. I don’t think Val was being sarcastic or joking. There are some very sick puppies on that other board, and I don’t mean that in a joking way. They are really suffering in their own ways.
Yeah, i vote for that. I have never hesitated to read any of Val’s posts. If you are on more than one ng, it’s easy to forget which ?-ville you are in. Deep peace, Lavon

(FWIW) Teri Is there ANY doubt as to the physical origin of all disease (or "health" for that matter)? Can you point me to just one single instance where the converse is true? Just one? Anybody? Jack
I can’t offer any counter examples, and am not much disposed to hold out mental functions as a class apart in any case, but I think there is a fair amount of evidence suggesting that mental changes or life events can precede and probably determine changes in brain chemistry. Post traumatic stress disorder comes to mind.

But, "mental changes" and "life events" ARE physical, and they do affect brain chemistry. Are you saying that mental changes can occur without changes in brain chemistry? If not, we agree. Jack

Off the top of my head, how about PTSD? (post incest, rape, war, & other major events) There is a physical/chemical component to many of the symptoms, of course, but the origin is primarily emotional. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Is there ANY doubt as to the physical origin of all disease (or "health" for that matter)? separate mental from physical illness
I wouldn’t presume to separate them, so I suppose it’s a chicken/egg argument, huh? Perhaps not even worth debate.

Are not emotions subjective expressions of physical processes? If not, what else could they be? Jack – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Off the top of my head, how about PTSD? Response:
Teri- The only people that I know of who separate mental from physical illness work for insurance companies. This is their "logic" for paying less, and it behooves them to label everything mental. It’s also in the best interest of some of my colleagues, but that’s another story. If it’s not physical, what is it? If it’s "mental" (subjective), how could it affect anything physical, unless the subjective is physically based, which is the only way it makes sense without getting religious. Have you ever thought about why some illnesses are called "mental", while others are "physical"? How would you classify schizophrenia?
