Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The average homeless person would object to being classified as a mental case. Most of them are just lazy or drug addicts. Many of them are veterans of Vietnam and the Gulf war. Aren’t you proud of the way the country treats, and thinks about, its war heroes? Especially now that there are more being created as we speak? And I bet you consider yourself to be a patriot. Does being a vet somehow make them more decrepit or more deserving of a free hand-out? I’m a Vietnam vet, and I don’t want any special favors. Offer them a job at minimum wage, and if they refuse, too bad for them. — John Richards
I dealt with street people for over 12 years. Most that clam they are VN vets are people if in all were in the service were kicked out for various reasons. Drugs, alcohol and etc. Most Vietnam vets are full productive citizens, Much like myself. Most street people are those who do not wish to conform to US standards of getting a job and earn a living. They want a hand out and think we owe them a living. Yes some are mental disturbed but a minority of them. Maybe 1 or 2 in every 10 are.

I have a simple means test for this. I offer to buy the person a couple of burgers at McDonalds. A truly hungry person will always accept the offer. — To reply via e-mail please delete "NOSPAM" from address.

I’ve done that as well.

I have done the same, and have been turned down about 80% of the time.

The excuses are interesting. My all time favorites: "Thank you but I just ate lunch and am trying to get money for dinner". " I am a vegetarian" "My boy friend is watching me from across the street. He is insanely jealous and will go berserk if he sees you giving me food". — To reply via e-mail please delete "NOSPAM" from address.

My offers of food are acceptred more often. What I’ve done on occasion when somebody wants to wash my windsheild or operate the gas pump for a tip to get money for food, I’ll tell them fine, and I’ll go into the mini mart and get a couple of hot dogs, or something else food-wise. My experience is that most of the time they’ve taken the food. Maybe I’ve been a bit more selective to whom I’ll make such an offer which may account for why I get an apparently higher percentages of acceptances.

No, our country screws its vets, but the the vast majority of street bums claiming to be vets are not (at least in SF). –Mike
The VA has a 600 bed treatment facility in Menlo Park for addicts/alcoholics. there is a waiting list. M

I think you’re playing a little loose with the facts (as in making them up). There are 913 beds in the entire VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) [the Menlo Park facility is just one three in-patient facilities within VAPAHCS]. Of those 913 beds, 100 are domiciliary. "The Menlo Park Division (MPD), located seven miles to the North, provides both inpatient and outpatient comprehensive domiciliary care, mental health, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and long-term geriatric care." Seems like their facility is for a lot more than just treating addicts and whinos. In fact, I’m not aware of any VA med center which treats just addicts and boozers. So put down the crack pipe and come up with some real facts. On a side note, why is it when you ask them what their MOS or rating was, they don’t have an answer? Fake "vets" may fool a lot of people, but they sure as hell don’t fool real vets. –Mike

My AFSC was 906 something I think. long time ago. Air Force Medic in burn and psych wards. Cold war vet. Saw lots of combat in Alabama and Texas. Won most of them. My hospital unit was still segregated in 1961. Officers and non-coms embezzling drugs and funds. Sheppard AFB, Texas, then TTAF. Also California National Guard until they found out I was underage. High school ROTC officer, rifle team, combat platoon leader. That was my US experience. M
Response:
0% of all substance abusers have mental health diagnosis. VA stats say that 25% of the homeless are Viet Nam Vets,
Can you back up that rediculous claim with a verifiable source? I never heard any such thing when I worked for the VA. Almost all VA facilities have alcohol and drug treatment in addition to medical and psych services. I have worked on the streets with homeless vets. Many with combat decorations for bravery.
Well, least lest that’s what they told you…but the gullible are easily deceived. –Mike

Geriatrics= wet brains PTSD-Also have substance abuse problems Homeless vets program=treatment for substance abuse and job counseling. 50% of all substance abusers have mental health diagnosis. VA stats say that 25% of the homeless are Viet Nam Vets, I don’t know how many are other era vets. Almost all VA facilities have alcohol and drug treatment in addition to medical and psych services. Reagan released many of them into the streets when he cut funding to hospitals and facilities. (Not that I would expect a right wing-nut to actually spend any time volunteering to find out…)
They just throw money at them and hope they go away. — "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." Teddy Roosevelt

fifty percent of drug addicts/alcoholics has a co-occurring severe psychiatric disorder. You just make this bullshit up. M

Not all true, but we wouldn’t have Gray Davis in Sacramento either. He would have had a house to go to!
