EEYORE, Did you even bother to read Cathys post where she states she has SEEN a specialist and that he said her heart was fine? Heart palpatations are a normal symptom with PD. Her Dr. said her heart was fine and now you are telling her she may need a pacemaker?!?!?! If a heart condition is ruled out (and you say it was), then you may be sure that it’s an anxiety symptom. Many of us have experienced it and it can be most disquieting even if you know your heart is OK. It is possible to take a separate medication for this if necessary which are *beta-blockers* like Inderal which are mostly prescribed for palpitations and high blood pressure. Performing artists use them sometimes as needed against stage fright. So if you take one, maybe you’ll become a great performing artist ;) Philip Peters — Spam Avoidance: You can Email me at "future at oz dot net". My web page is at: http://www.oz.net/~future/. Response:

Hi Cathy, Yes it does sound familiar…. I suspect everyone that has lurked or posted here has had the same feeling, and concerns. I have had the same response from many doctors, "not to worry", "its nothing". But it is something, if you are concerned about it, if it effects your life, then you do need to do something about it. I for one spent many months / years hoping it would go "away" and things would be normal. It was not until I sought out the professional help that I needed that things got better for me. It did not happen over night,  and I tried many options from self-help to reg lion, to meds, all helped in some ways and all failed in some ways. I was always looking for that "magic bullet" that would "cure" me forever. I now do not think there is a "cure" for PD, but I’m here to tell you that there is hope. Hope to lead a "normal" life, Hope to walk down the street and forget for a few hours that you are different, Hope to do the things you want to do and enjoy your family. I was once told by a doctor that "God dealt me this hand now I must play it." – Meaning, I can continue to feel sorry about myself, and keep looking for the reason this has happened to me. (The why me question) or I can do something about it. I choose to do something about it. I took the meds, sometimes they worked, sometimes they did not and I had to switch. To make a long story short, I got the help I needed and I got my life back! Don’t get me wrong I have my days/weeks and I have fallen back in to the same old "traps". But now I know with help from the "right" doctors, (and they are out there) and support from my family, (and some good internet chat rooms. http://panicdisorder.miningco.com/mpchat.htm) that I’m not alone and things will get better. Please go to the doctor, get ALL the medical reasons ruled out, request, no demand that every test that can be run be run on you. and if the test show nothing, seek out a professional in your area that knows PD and how to treat it. It WORKS, you will find what works for you. You will beat this and life will get better for you and your family! <SNIT SNIPPED You have taken the first important step – see a doctor.  If you are not comfortable with the way that doctor tested / treated you, see another doctor.  If mult. doctors say your heart is fine, that in itself may help to reduce the anxiety related to the rapid pulse. For me, I have found that SLOWLY increasing my exercise level, doing breathing exercises, and changing my diet has helped incredibly.  I now have only occasional attacks of any real impact – I used to be at the point that I could not work or even walk for 5 minutes.  You can, of course, also discuss with your doctor what meds, if any, might be of any use to you.  For me, I found that both beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers made things worse, but YMMV.   And, as always, more info on what has been working for me is on my web page – link listed below. Cathy, It sounds too familiar. My breath quickens, my heart races, I break out in a cold sweat – I’m terrified and I think I’m going to die. My brain races blaming, criticising, making it worse….’why is this happening to me?, what was the trigger? what am I doing wrong?  I’m going mad?’ But it’s only a feeling. It won’t harm me. I won’t die. It comes and it goes and I’m OK. If I see it coming and I fight it, it becomes a monster, consuming me. If I see it coming and invite it like an old, well known acquaintance it passes through me. It’s only a feeling, it does not define me. I watch it, I study it and I get to know it inside out. I am the observer, feeling it and watching it. This how I deal with it and I’ve made great progress with therapy, without drugs. Why does this happen? I have anxiety attacks as a symptom of post traumatic stress disorder resulting from a long term abusive relationship. It is a common occurance in survivors due to the repressed emotions involved. As I deal with the emotions and express the sadness, the fear and the anger appropriately the anxiety slowly but surely reduces. This is my story and everybody has a different story. Hi Cathy,   I, and several others here, have experienced this as well.  As long as you have had your heart checked out, I would *try* not to worry <g.  It is something I have just learned to live with.  I can say that mine has gotten better since I first noticed it about 7 years ago. Hope that helps, Lee Woo Woo Wooooooooooo!!!

Sorry to piggy-back on this without seeing the original post, but if you have skipping beats and heart racing it could be panic but it could also be related to several other things.  Hyperactive thyroid for one.  Or it is possible that you are experiencing atrial fibrillation which while not immediately life threatening is serious and should be checked out.  Don’t sit on it.   get it checked out and find out what it is.
