Question:
Felt panicky since my heart attack and bypass which I had in February. Physically I seem to be doing ok but feel a sense of panic sometimes when I go out to town or see friends. Been to see the doctor and he felt this was post traumatic stress disorder from the Operation. He prescribed LUSTRAL. I have looked at a few websites that show lot of bad side effects. What should I do? Thought about cognitive therapy perhaps? Should I take the drug or ride theses attacks out? Thanks Ken (again)

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is certainly a very good option for you. Lustral (sertraline, Zoloft in the US) is a good and often effective AD which works well for anxiety but it has its drawbacks like all AD’s. If you can get into a good CBT programme soon it might be all you need. As you live in the UK I suppose being prescribed a benzo to takes *as needed* is out of the question? That would be a good addition to CBT. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

In my experience, living in the UK and getting CBT appears to be out of the question. My local health trust (NHS) offers psychotherapy and nothing else. I don’t see how talking about my childhood and at what age I first masturbated helps me walk across bridges or cope with crowded shops etc. The alternative is to pay
