You might find some useful info on the following website: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/anxiety It’s for the Anxiety Disorders Education Program, "a national education campaign developed by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to increase awareness among the public and health care professionals that anxiety disorders are real medical illnesses that can be effectively diagnosed and treated. More than 23 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders, which include panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias and generalized anxiety disorder." nowhere and there seems to be no apparent reason for them. An anxiety attack on the other hand usually comes from something like worry or a situation. Panic attacks——you feel like you are dying. Can’t breath, chest pains——I have nearly passed out from mine——-and this horrible fear that you are going to die. <sigh

I did do part of a practice called ngondro that helped tremendously. It went like this: everynight, while laying in bed and waiting to sleep, I would intentionally think about all the people and animals and all the living things and how they all were born and will someday die and how that moment of death is forever unknown and forever experienced essentially alone. How this happens to everyone and every living thing and how things struggle to survive and how that moment can come at anytime, when completely unaware, like a flash of lightning on a seemingly cloudless night. Any one or any living thing that would pop into my mind I would try to think about this from their perspective and I would keep it up for hours until I slept even all night if I couldn’t sleep. I did this every night for around three months before I noticed a change. During that time I read Kubler-Ross and memoirs like We Die Alone, and canons like the Tibetan Book of the Dead and I thought a lot of people I knew who were dead and what it may have been like for them, that moment of death. And I would think about me and how it could happen at any time and all the different ways it could happen, hundreds and thousands of different ways. And how it is all unknowable and uncertain and most especially how each and every living thing lives in that state, that predicament, for each and every single moment of life. It comes and goes but tonite I’m having a panic attack real bad and don’t know what to do until the morning when I can go find a pro to get some help. I’m not suicidal or anything like that just scared out of my wits and don’t know why.
That is something else, death is just the symbolic object that it has attached itself to. The heart racing and the suffocation bits make death an easy thing to panic on. The only exercise I know for panic is to lie quietly and to think of five things that can be heard and to listen to each for a moment, and then five things that can be seen and to just look at each for a moment, even if they are just things in imagination, like when you’re in a darkened room, and then five things that can be felt, like whatever can be felt against the skin, and then just feel each of those for a moment. Then I start at one end of my body and I tense all the muscles, hold it for a moment and then relax them at once and then go on to the next part, usually from the bottom to the top and then when that is done I think about floating for awhile, like imagine floating. I just do that sometimes, over and over for awhile. When I can.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Anyone else sometimes fear death, esp. the aspect of not existing? It’s not the process of dying I’m referring to; also I don’t believe in hell or an afterlife. It’s just that every day in my life I’ve woken up, and had the feelings or awareness, consciousness, or what have you. The certainty that one day I’ll go unconsious and never "wake up," and be able to do another thing or have any more experiences seems pretty depressing. Isn’t life basically a rip-off, where you get to have a finite amount of living only to have to face an eternity of non- existence? Anyone else think maybe we get reincarnated when we die, but we’ll never know it? I sometimes think it would be good to undergo *perfect* amnesia, just to get a taste of what death might be like. More philosophical: what would my conscious experience, i.e., my life, be like if I (my body and mind) never existed? Would I have (1) Experienced life through someone else’s body and mind? Is (1) even coherent? Any thoughts?
Not existing sounds pretty nice but the idea of ‘BOOM now you’re here, BOOM now you’re not’ is pretty hard for me to handle. It does kind of suck the meaning out of life. If we’re all going to die anyway yadda yadda yadda. You want to know what I’ve decided? Probably not because my thoughts are fairly pointless. If I want my life to have any meaning I have to put it there. I was born. My genetic make up is the blank canvass. What picture I decide to paint is up to me. If I want my life to have meaning I have to put the meaning there. Before you buy.

To me, the prospect of non-existence is not frightening. But I don’t believe that that is the case. It is the uncertainty of death, "For in that sleep of death what dreams may come", that frightens me.
Every day I am frightened out of my wits by my daily commute, and interacting with the people at the office. But I have adapted to my fear. I focus on my daily functioning, with the fear gibbering over my shoulder in the background. I shall always be afraid. And in that, whatever lies beyond death does not frighten me.

If there is no existence after death, I don’t think I’ll be around to care. If there is a God after death, he better have a pretty convincing reason to put me in hell, because I’ll kick his ass.

I basically believe that we have things to learn. Now depression isn’t the only way to learn the things I am learning in this life but I worry that if I kill myself, the next set of circumstances which will teach me the same lessons could be worse. Who knows. Maybe killing myself in a previous life is how I got here in the first place. Cessair

Hi June, welcome to ASD. I experienced an NDE on Halloween, 1973, as a result of a drug overdose while I was in the Army in Korea. One thing I got out of the experience was the loss of the fear of death. That seems to be one of the common factors which NDE’ers share. Now, if only I could lose my fear of living…. Again, welcome to ASD. Frank

Don’t know if you’re serious or just yanking some chains, but speaking as someone that tried (obviously unsucessfully) to off myself three times about 25 years ago, consider this. You’re gonna die anyway whether you want to or not. No one gets out alive. Whats the big hurry to race prematurely towards the eneveitable. This was the thought that occured to me shortly after my third suicide attempt that totally changed my opinion about suicide. Now I realize how short life is. When you consider how long you’re alive as compared with how long you may be dead, ( eternity? who knows) each minute you’re alive is a precious moment in time. If you’re serious, don’t give up on life, die in a purely mental way. If the thought patterns you entertain aren’t working for you, change your mind. However, don’t expect enlightenment to make everything alright in a world where much is wrong. The best we can do is to fight the good fight, and live for givin the devil his due. Even if you aren’t serious, I’m posting this in the hopes that it might help someone that’s as tormented as I once used to be. =^^= Dave Moore Oh ,, by the way, if you’re scared to commit suicide, then there’s probably a good reason. Listen to it.

According to urban legend, nazi soldiers were given methadone (adolphine, dolophine) to make them fearless in battle. To qualify for methadone maintenance you first need to be a heroin addict. So take up heroin as your drug of choice. Once you are a heroin addict the joys of scoring may turn you off suicide.

Personally i find that Alcohol is quite effective, i think if you are confined to your own house and u lock all the doors before you wont stumble upon anyone else, and u certainly wont injure them. Somebody also mentions MDMA (Ecstacy) It *does* make you want to kill yourself if you take approx. 7 pills, that in itself wont kill you, it will just make you feel either very very lively, possibly a bit sick only for a short time though, or it will make you go like a cabbage, either way, you wont sleep, and i guarantee you that by about 12noon the next day you’ll be just about ready to off yourself, you cant beat a come-down for suicidal tendencies….. anyway, if your scared to die i’m thinking your not ready… maybe you should hold out a little while until the fear goes away, because it does when your ready

In my case , my wife and I have an animal shelter. These animals depend on us. But insofar as social work goes, it does indeed help to see others that have it much worse than us, yet still want to live. How does that go? I once complained about having no shoes until I saw someone with no feet. =^^=

You are correct Vincent . . . it is meth. Check out the Meth vault on Erowid where they mention "Hitler’s drug" as one of the names used to refer to methamphetamine. The Nazis gave their soldiers meth so they could fight for days at a time without sleep. I also recall seeing this reference on a History Channel program about the origins and use of various illegal drugs in recent history. raven2go

If I had the balls to do it, I would have killed myself a long time ago. But instead I’ve decided I don’t have the balls to do it, and instead I try and get my hand on every single mind-altering substance there is to get me through life, since I can’t live it on my own. I was extremely intoxicated once, and with a friend (who was not suicidale) and I decided it was time to ‘go’ and attempted to lay down on the train tracks down by my house (my head agains one of the rails) but my friend of course dragged me off them. Never had the balls to try something like that again, but I know the times coming. There’s no reason to live if your life isn’t worth living (does that make sense?)
. So in other words, if you want to overcome the fear of the death, alcohol seemed to help the most for me. Cheers Gargle
