07 Dec 1999 Drug Approved to Treat Post-Traumatic Stress, by Lisa Richwine EXCERPT: " WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The antidepressant Zoloft on Tuesday became the first government-approved treatment for relieving the nightmares and emotional problems caused by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD, often perceived as limited to combat veterans, strikes women twice as often as men after troubling events such as rapes, domestic abuse or serious accidents. As many as 8 percent of Americans may have the disorder at some point in their lives, experts say. Even before the Food and Drug Administration’s approval on Tuesday, doctors were prescribi…" U.S. and friendly nation laws prohibit fully reproducing copyrighted material. Thanks so much for posting this! I shall look it up at work and forward it to all the individuals (I have other names! ;^)) who think I am lying about my situation. All I have to say is….up theirs!! Deeanna

thanks for the info. What does Zoloft do. Is it an SRI. I am taking propanalol and nefazadone (serzone),. My symptoms now are mainly numbness and concentration and memory problems. 30 years of being spaced out and not laid down new memories. Would Zoloft be better than Serzone. Surely PTSD covers a lot of symptoms. Nefazadone helped me cool the anger. Propanalol helps me to concentrate. PTSD seems llike to wide a category to be covered by one drug. Estelle

Why. WHY did it have to be Zoloft?!? I’ve got such a bad reaction to the stuff in terms of side effects that I might as well be allergic to it. It leaves me chronically exhausted, with severe weakness, nausea, dizziness and aekethesia, which for those who don’t know it is the feeling described by some ex-heroin users as feeling like you’ve got bugs crawling all over your body, or like your insides are trying to squirm out through your outsides. I’m glad they came up with something, and I’m sure it will help some people, but I’m so discouraged i’m ready to cry. -Naomi

Someone will probably be through here soon flaming the American War Library as being a rip-off against military veterans, so I won’t bother commenting on the poster. If you subscribe to any news clipping service, like Excite, Yahoo, MyWay, NewsPage_Direct (my personal favorite), you can get your own news and not depend upon others. FWIW, I think that I read the headline last week or so. > What does Zoloft do. Is it an SRI.
Yes, Zoloft (generic name sertraline) is an SRI. It has been on the VA Brecksville approved list for at least 5 years and used in the treatment of PTSD. I’ll bet that the US government includes the VA system.

Please, ask your prescribing physician. No one but your prescribing physician can make this kind of decision. If you don’t trust the prescribing physician’s judgment, find another doctor. > PTSD seems llike to wide a category to be covered by one drug.
Agreed! Smile and there will be something to smile about! Nancy

Hi, Zoloft didn’t work for me but then I was on it 6 months. Maybe it did in the first 2 months but didn’t help the sleep, nightmares and flashbacks. My life changed when I was placed on serzone. Wow what a change!! I have been on it nearly a year and I can function-sleep,work and mood. I still get burst of anger but I think the serzone moderates that response a bit. Scott did you get my e-mail. Good Luck to all Barb

Don’t ya hate that when you take a new med and it seems like FOREVER, and it never does ‘kick in’? The doctor will tell you over and over again to ‘give it time’ but that time just never comes. I know because the first drug I was on was Prozac, which didn’t do squat for me. I took it for about five months. Never slept more than 4 hours a night and was STILL depressed and angry on top of it. I my experience, if the drug doesn’t do ‘anything’ within two weeks, that is, if you don’t feel ANY improvement at all, it probably isn’t going to work. <sigh> Sucks. Lu

What you said about people who think you are lying triggered off a lot of angry feelings because I dealt with those people as well. There is a lot of stuff on the internet about PTSD symptoms. Just search on things like PTSD + Adrenalin, or stress and adrenalin. When I found information like this, I felt in control again because all the people who thought I had lying had got to me. estelle

Zoloft didn’t work for me either. Had a very good doc that explained it raised my dopamine level TOO high. It made my anxiety worse, if you can imagine THAT hell. Oh boy. Serzone worked great for me too. But my panic broke through. So Klonopin was next. It was perfect. The serzone caused a bad side effect so I got switched to a new one, Celexa. Med trials…gotta love ‘em
