Question:
Buspar is a good drug – I have been on it for three years. Talk to your doctor but in my estimation, it is no placebo. My anxiety was so terrible, I do not know what I would have done without the buspar.
It’s a case of YMMV. Most people are not helped by Buspar. That’s *most*, you just happen to be the exception. Lucky you!

A few days ago I wrote about starting to take BuSpar and if it helps. I’ve gotten some good comments but, now I read in this group that it may be a "inactive placebo" what’s that mean? I’d like to know what an ‘active’ placebos is?! Ian
Well I an..hehehe..I don’t mean to be a *smart ass* (which I usually am..hehe)..but this is probably totally off topic from what you had posted about. An "active placebo" is what is FINALLY starting to be used in testing psychiatric drugs..because…simply..it is much more effective then a "sugar pill"..Let me explain..*ahem*..hehe..one reason why psychiatric drug reaserch was rather inneffective at times over the past half century was because participants could tell if they where getting a drug or a placebo simply by side effects.(ie. t.c a.d’s cause dry mouth..constipation..fatigue…etc), and the placebo group where not getting any of these symptoms. This is how not only participants, but worse off, the researchers could tell who was getting the drug and who wasn’t. So, there go the "Scientific Method" out the window!! Sooo..they are starting to finally develop "active placebos" that "mimic" some of the side effects of tested drugs. (ie..adding a bit of anti-cholergenic drug to placebos being tested against t.c’s…etc) So…hope this makes sense (I AM FAR from being a scientist…LOL)..but it appears they are getting MUCH more accurate results from scientific testing of psychiatric drugs by using the "active placebo". The simple facts: Buspar sometimes works for mild anxiety (takes 2-4 weeks to kick in) and doesn’t work for Panic Attacks.
It is true that BuSpar doesn’t work for panic disorder. If you have panic disorder (i.e. spontaneous panic attacks that don’t seem to be related to any external events or thoughts you are having) and your doctor tries to treat it with BuSpar alone, don’t let him/her! However, it can work even for fairly severe generalized anxiety, not just for "mild anxiety." (GAD is not necessarily mild!) Some people find that it takes higher doses than the recommended maximum of 60mg. It also works for depression BTW, although again higher doses may be required. -elizabeth

i was on Buspar for two months. It did help to calm me down but in the end it just wasnt enough to actually take the problem away. So now im on Paxil and it seems to be working out great. talk to your doctor about all of your options and decide with him which is the best for you.

I have been taking BuSpar for 18 days now. I have not been able to sleep at all. Last night I took 10 mg. Ambien and slept for two hours. I am exhausted. Also, I cannot eat. Can Paxsil be taken in addition to BuSpar
Response:
Definately they can, however the dosage needs to be adjusted accordingly, since they kind of do the same thing. I currently take 15mg of Buspar in addition to the Paxil (20mg). This actually tends to help the sexual problems. I can say I have not had any sexual problems while taking paxil. I did have some initial sleep problems with buspar, but that did subside after a couple of weeks. Good luck! d – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have been taking BuSpar for 18 days now. I need something to clam me down and I’m taking a sugar pill? Please does it work or not? I’m very sorry to sound upset but, I just don’t like being jerked around when it comes to meds.

Hi Muffinsman, I think, IMO (In My Opinion), that Buspar does help with GAD (generalized anxiety disorder). But as far as PAD (panic anxiety disorder), Buspar will do nothing. This comes from my own experience. When all my problems started, I was diagnosed with GAD, and was prescribed Buspar and Librium (don’t remember dosages). That time they worked. Now I have been diagnosed as having PAD. My pdoc tried the Buspar and Librium again, and it did NOTHING for me.. From there I went on to Zoloft and Klonopin but had to get off Zoloft because I could not tolerate the side effects. Now I am on Serzone 300 mgs. daily and Klonopin 2 to 2 1/2 mgs. daily… So far this combo works for me… I hope you find something that works as well for you… Good Luck, Mary Kay

Hi: You have nothing to worry about..Buspar IS NOT, nor EVER HAS BEEN just a placebo. It is a VERY powerful drug, just as much as Prozac or Xanax. It’s mechanisms of actions are different from those meds, though. I wish people would stop using those references to this medication. It HAS helped people, alone and in combo with an anti-depressant, in dealing with anxiety AND depression. Again, it VERY MUCH depends on the individual, though. The ONLY way you can find out if it works for you is to try it. It is a rather safe medication, with few complications and drug/drug interactions. Try it, at your doctors advice, and see if it works. Give it a few weeks, as it needs this amount of time to build up in the body and work. If it doesn’t, at least you tried. It’s when you give up that hope that leads us to despair and hopelessness. Good luck..and let us know how you make out. Oh…..for mor info on Buspar, I’d suggest goto http://www.mentalhealth.com , click on "medications", then scroll down and click on "Buspar". You will get ALL the info you need on the medication, plus past studies on the different uses of the med (ie. for anxiety, GAD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, etc). Hope this helps, and if you have anymore questions, please feel free to email me. Take care! James — "You can fight..fight without ever winning.. Well here is the deal with Buspar. It works for some, others it does not. You will find this to be the case with all meds. For me Buspar definitely did take some of the edge off, however not all of it. I ended up having to take Paxil also, but still take Buspar (15 mg.) per day. If it works well for you I say, Great. What I noticed it took nearly 5 weeks for me to get a lot of relief from it, and 9 weeks until it was consitent. This is usually less for most people, I just am weird in that way. Good Luck and let us know what is going on. Also if you can give a little more background on what your diagnosis is, since Buspar is more effective with GAD as opposed to Panic disorder.
