Um, pardon me and all, but no one know for sure whether or not the people that wrote the Bible were real people in the sense you used it in.  And anyways, if something has been "written," it has to have been made by someone, and my guess is it is a real person, and not Spiderman or some shit.  Oh, and btw, screw the Bible.  Tell ya what: knew three born again Christians…they all shot themselves.  Hmm…dying so soon after being "reborn."  Talk about SIDS. genny

That way you can explain all the details to them so that they can put it into context. Also Sometimes even if someone is hurting they may rebel against a well intentioned offer of help as a defense against really feeling emotions which they are trying to deny. And that would be counter productive and unfortunate. Also you mentioned her use of drugs which may affect her behavior such that you may think she is not being her usual self…that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s is Dissociating. You just might be dealing with a drug persona alternating with her non-drug persona. However,Dissociation may develop as a defense against a bad situation where the only way to cope was to avoid the pain by removing ones self from it inside your head. I like to think of it as "internal avoidance". Since this defense works pretty well it can become used too much and too often and interfer with later less traumatic situations where such defense is no longer benefitial. There is a continium of this type of experience which is similar to how you can ignore painful thoughts by occupying your brain with music/TV or getting lost in a book so much you can’t hear the people talking next to you for example. If you have web access you can go to http://www.webcom.com/pleasant/sarah/mental.html#did Then scroll down a bit to the Dissociative Identity Disorder heading and the 6th item below it called "Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) " gives a easily readable description of DID and how it may develop in response as a defense to traumatic events. The best to you alan kinear

If you read The Urantia Book, then you know that personality is unique and bestowed by our Universal Father. It is never bestowed in multiples upon a single living organism.

Why are you frequently refering to the Urantia Book in response to someone’s request for help?  What specific help will it give them?  I read the Urantia Book, yes the whole thing.  The concluding papers in it refer to the "fatherhood of God" and the "brotherhood of man" – I prefer the Bible with authors that were real people.

Hi, Tina!  I’d like to suggest you post a request for help and information over on alt.support.dissociation.  Multiplicity is one flavor of dissociation. There are many people over on a.s.dis who understand MP (or DID as it is formally called these days; DID = Dissociative Identity Disorder), either from being multiple themselves or by being friends/family of MPs or by being knowledgeable and concerned professionals.  (There are also folks there who have experience with dissociation but are not multiple.) You might also want to check into the availability of Nar-Anon in your area, since you mention that your friend has a drug problem.  Nar-Anon is the 12-Step recovery program for friends/family of drug addicts.  It is to NA what Al-Anon is to AA.  I’ll bet if you look up NA in the phone book and call them, they could refer you to a Nar-Anon meeting. Good luck! Priscilla

I am not sure what the first respondent was getting at.  Most libraries will have material on Multiple Personality Disorder, though the current terminology used is Dissociative Identity Disorder.  The easiest thing to do is find a computer catalog at a library and search under Multiple Personality Disorder (the new DID term will probably not be indexed yet in most libraries).  There may be a total of fhirty books I know of on this topic, but rare is the library which would have more than a few.  I thought The Flock was the best of the first hand accounts.  Some of the third person accounts, like Sybil, Shatter, The Three Faces of Eve, and etc, are a little intimidating I think.  These books are either a bit sensationalistic, or deal with multiples who have severe memory loss and no "co-consciousness."  Meaning their personalities do not know or communicate with each other…thus the person may end up going to Chicago and not knowing how or why she/he got there.  I doubt that all multiples have such severe dissociation, at least over long periods of time.     Hope this helps.  The magazine called Many Voices is an excellent resource and has a bibliography issue about once a year, I believe.  It is written by multiples and therapists for multiples and therapists.     Predicting any possible danger to your friend is difficult.  But of course if you can be a friend to this person, I would think the danger would be less.  Despair and utter confusion and loneliness are often the dangers which lead to tragedy.

This "flies in the face" of current terminology, but "multiple personality" does not really exist. It is simple to understand why this is so. Read about it in your own Urantia Book.

I have been searching everywhere for any information possible on multiple personality disorders.  I feel my roommate may be a multiple, and I want to understand the disease, as well as, help her if I can.  I also want to understand it more so that I can become less fearful.   She was also sexually abused as a child and has had a drug problem.  I don’t want her to be hurt any more than she already has.   Any help that anyone can give me on understanding multiple personality disorder and its treatment is greatly appreciated.  I am also interested in hearing from anyone who has been through a similar expereince. DId the treatment hurt you?  Do I have just reason to be afraid for her? Please help! — Tina M. Abbott Maywood, NJ
