Xanax/over the counter drugs

Question:

[snip] Question: 1) How does 1 to 1.25 mgs of xanax daily measure up…..is this considered the normal dosage for anxiety/panic?

This is a low maintenance dose for anxiety/panic.  It is common for people to be prescribed 3 mg/day and more, up to a maximum of about 10 mg/day, although that high a dose is very rare. 2)Can i take an over the counter drug such as Motrin (Ibuprophen) or Nyquil without worrying about drug interactions.

You need to check with your pharmacist about individual medications. Ibuprofen should be OK.  OTOH, something like Zantac, which is now OTC, does interact with Xanax (not harmful, but does increase Xanax levels).  There are enough meds that interact with Xanax that you really should check. I must really say  all the things that scared me to the point that i thought I was Never going to be better is all gone(or should i say controlled) now. Thanks, jeff

Hi: I have posted here before and this support system here has always proved a BIG help to me. In the past I would take a .25 or an ocassional .5 when I felt an attack coming on. Well, I finally began taking it on a regular basis…approx two .5’s of xanax…I never exceed 1.25mg’s a day. Bottom line…….No panic attacks…anxiety definitely under control. i haven’t felt this GOOD in years. The exhaustion, hypochondria….all gone. All due to this orange pill…yes. I do notice if I skip a day…uh oh…it comes back a bit to remind me it’s lurking around the corner. Great to hear that Xanax has worked so well for you Jeff.  :) Question: 1) How does 1 to 1.25 mgs of xanax daily measure up…..is this considered the normal dosage for anxiety/panic?

Seems to range anywhere between .5 to 8 mg or more a day….there’s just no telling what dose does the trick for each person. 2)Can i take an over the counter drug such as Motrin (Ibuprophen) or Nyquil without worrying about drug interactions.

ALWAYS check with the pharmacist.  You can check this stuff out on the WWW of course, but checking with the pharmacist is really the way to go.  They’re usually right up to date on OTC and prescription meds and I’ve always found them to be very helpful and informative. It feels really good to know you’ve got them under control, doesn’t it?  Be nice when that big day comes when we can say definitely "cured", but controlled is the next best thing. Mally  :)

** Hi Jeff; before I get to your questions, I was just wondering if you’d checked with your doctor about changing your dosage of meds. I know you say that you never exceed 1.25 mg/day, which is fine, IMO, but I just hope that your doctor is aware of it. I "once" and only once told my doc that I’d taken a "bit" extra, and he flew off the handle at me. After all, he was in charge and responsible for my medication. Since that time, I’ve never taken more, nor have I ever taken less than the prescribed daily dosage.  With that said, I’m glad you found the "correct" med and "correct" daily dosage that has helped you. On another point, now that you’re on a daily dosage, if you skip a day, it is quite likely that it may not be the anxiety lurking, but withdrawal symptoms. I know that Xanax reminds "me" if I miss a dose, and I’ve been taking Xanax daily for over 8 years now. It goes with the territory for me, and all literature would suggest the same. Once on a daily dose, it’s not advised to skip a day. In fact, I’ll write here what I get from my pharmacy with each script: "If you miss a dose of this medicine and you are using it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If you do not remember until later, skip the "missed" dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once." ** IMO, this is something that your doctor should be quite aware of; or at the very least, your pharmacist can answer these things for you. 1) How does 1 to 1.25 mgs of xanax daily measure up…..is this considered the normal dosage for anxiety/panic?

** Jeff, I’d think that this is something to discuss with your doctor if you haven’t. As it’s different for each person, I’ll  only say that if that dose is working for you, then it’s a non-issue. If you’re wondering if it’s too much, I’ve read studies that vary anywhere from 3 to 10 mg/day, but "most" of what I’ve read has me at what is considered the therapeutic dose, which is 6 mg/day. OTOH, many find relief on MUCH smaller amounts, so again, discuss this with your doctor. I’m just telling you what *my* dose is, and that came from my doctor. 2)Can i take an over the counter drug such as Motrin (Ibuprophen) or Nyquil without worrying about drug interactions.

** I can tell you that I take ibuprophin for aches, pains, and the occasional headache, and there’s no conflict. I have no idea about Nyquil, but again, your pharmacist or doctor can ealily answer these questions for you. They "are" the professionals. — Used wisely, your 2
