Question:

Hi, everyone. I am new to this board, but i was diagnosed with anxiety/depression at the beginning of this summer after getting very ill down at college and not having anyone (including doctors) treat me properly – it turned out to be a sinus infection that could have been discovered long before. Anyway, about this whole chemical thing — i am just really confused.  I have a tendency to believe that I was predisposed to anxiety b/c i can always remember having an anxiety attack at times, but never very bad or never many during the period of a week like at the beginning of the summer. But, i believe that this huge stress (not knowing what was wrong with me, not having anyone help me) caused the anxiety to come out in full force. My main concern with this is the future. Will i always have this? Will my children have this when i decide to start a family? Please give me any info you have.

In many cases PD is genetic in origin. Did your parents suffer from any anxiety disorder, depression, alcoholism etc.? However that may be,  it seems that PD actually is something like the central nervous system being out of whack, a biological imbalance which can be triggered my heavy stressors in life to manifest itself (although one’s first PA’s may als come totally out of the blue). What have you done for your PD? The usual route is from your GP to a pdoc who specializes in anxiety and possibly to add a psychologist for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy if you suffer from spin-off-phobias like situational anxiety/agoraphobia. It’s a most unpleasant disorder but the good news it *can* be treated. While nobody can predict the future, chances are that the sooner you get properly treated the greater the possibility to minimeze the damage. Unfortunately PD tends to run in families and children of PD-sufferers have 4-7 times more chance of developing PD themselves than children of *normies*. Anyway, the sooner treatment starts, the better. Please keep us posted! Philip

Keep in mind that anxiety disorders and gastrointestinal functions involve some of the same hormones. Often, this can produce a condition known as Gastro-Esophegial Reflux Disorder (GERD) which causes severe acid-reflux (as in heart burn). This can result in stomach acid reaching the sinus cavities of the nose and ears, which may possibly have been responsible for your sinus infection. If you experience more sinus problems, you may want to consult a doctor about GERD.                                         Best Wishes,                                         Arthur

Thank you all for responding. I am being treated for it since the summer. I saw a psychiatrist this summer for a few months and have seen a counselor at college, but i havent had to see him in weeks due to having no problems whatsoever. I am on 15mg of Paxil right now and would eventually like to get off. Were any of you on meds and then were able to get off?????

How’s it going, Iwu? I tell you what, we’re always "getting off meds" around here.  The problem is finding something that we can stay on.  You’ll find that there are two medications *IMO* that are really popular.  Stick around and you’ll see what they are. Mel "YMMV"…My body knows the difference.

When I first experienced panic attacks, I was on Imiprimine and Xanax. I was age 16 then, and because of the insurance policy, I couldn’t be covered for auto insurance while on the meds.  I broke free of them, got my drivers license and ended up back on them anyway.  I’ve tried to go back and forth.  It really sucks to have meds all of the time — I’ve gone throught *exactly* what you have experienced:  Will I be on these meds for the rest of my life?  I’ve had different meds since those ten years have passed and not I’m proud to be on only one medication: Prozac.  Panic Disorder did cause me depression and that runs rampant among most PD sufferers, including myself.  I figured this:  I’ll take those stupid pills, as long as I don’t have to have another panic attack.  Hell. I’d rather anything over a panic attack!  I know that eventually be off of the meds, but one thing is extremely clear to me now:  After all of this experience of depression and panic disorder, I am a much more spiritual and relaxed person than I ever was!  I love working with people, but enjoy my solitude also.  I hope that helps. Hi, I was wondering if anyone wakes up in the morning and have there jaw shiver like there cold. Also does anyone evr try to take a nap and when they close there eyes they seem like there falling slightly or it feels like there head drops or something its hard to explain. Let me know ok Caryn

I always wake up with a "cracked out" feeling from my jaw being clenched all night. I also have tinnitus and my jaw cracks when I open my mouth wide. There’s a name for that but I forget what it is, T something. I also have the feeling of literally " falling" asleep sometimes, and even when I was a kid my whole body would go numb for a while when I would try and go  to sleep. I think most of the things you’ve mentioned are normal things that everyone experiences, but probably moreso for panic/ anxiety sufferers.

I have had where I shiver and tremble like I am cold when I am not, but it usually happens in the late afternoon or early evening. For me, it happens when my anxiety has been very high for a long time. Also does anyone evr try to take a nap and when they close there eyes they seem like there falling slightly or it feels like there head drops or something its hard to explain. Let me know ok Caryn

I think I know what you are talking about, I get funny sensations as I am just falling to sleep, one is a head rush, I`ve had the "feel like falling" feeling and sometimes I will startle for no apparent reason when drifting off to sleep. I know anxiety plays a big part in these sensations but I also believe that these sensations happen to everybody at one time or another. When we are anxious, we tend to beome hypervigilint about every feeling and sensation that happens in our body. So a normal sensation becomes something to fear and obsess about. I know it is hard to believe that these sensations are part of anxiety and not dangerous, I assure you they are. Take care!! Jackie ~*~You Can’t Find Love By Finding The Perfect Person.. I would think so in order to sleep ones brain and nervous system has to relax and then slowly slough off into a different state of consciousness-if you fight this you tend to bounce from relaxation to awareness and you feel it.

I get shiverring jaw if I’ve had a day-time sleep in the afternoon, but not always. The falling sensation prior to and just before awakening sleep, (WHEN I can get it!!)  has been with me all my life, but once again only occasionaly. I dont think you need to worry Caryn:-) cheers,…..FC
