Thyroid Disease and Panic???

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hey Everyone, I promiced to keep you all updated on my progress. Well I went to my PDoc yesterday and she want’s me to be tested for Hypothyroidism. I have a lot of the classic symptoms. Dry-itchy skin, always cold ( I’m cold to the touch and I always feel cold), I bruise very easily. I get the "Pins and Needles" sensation that can go along with it. I have gained A LOT of weight in a very short time and I feel and look "bloated" (puffy face, hands, etc…), hair loss, and dry hair that "frizzes". Chest pain and slow pulse. I always feel drained and letargic…it’s an effort just to walk up the stairs from my bedroom. So she want’s me to be tested. It runs in my family too. On both sides. Both my moms sister and my dad sister suffer from it. I was not aware that panic attacks can be a part of it. Do any of you know??? Anyway I am getting the blood work done on Monday. Kirsten

Getting a blood test to check out the thyroid is part of the initial evaluation of *anyone* (regardless of family history) with panic disorder or anxiety or depression. Chip Before you buy.

I was first treated for depression starting in the spring of 1993.  It took til the winter of 1995 before my hypothyroidism was diagnosed.  I was so uninformed back then or I would have requested a test. Kirsten…it is a blood test that you will have to take to see how your thyroid functioning is.  And if you have hypothryoidism, you will have to take a pill every day.  I have become a med phobic, but for some reason, I am not afraid to take my thyroid pill.  Probably because I was taking it for 5 years before the meds that brought on my anxiety. PS- I’m scared. I don’t like hospitls or needles. And what if I do have it then what? It’s treatable but still….help! kirsten

Hi Kirsten…I have hypothyroidism.  I remember how relieved I was when it was diagnosed.  I know it was a big factor in my depression.  I am not sure of the relationship to panic/anxiety.  The symptoms are so related to depression.  My panic/anxiety problems started with antidepressant meds, but right around the same time I started a new AD, I had also had my thyroid medicine increased.  One of the first things I did was ask for another test to make sure I was not being over medicated for thyroid.  I would think that an OVER active thyroid would contribute to panic.  At any rate, it is good to be tested and find out, it certainly does sound like you have the classic symptoms.  I would come home from work in my suit, kick off my shoes and not even take off my blazer and crawl under the covers because I was so fatigued and tired.  Good luck and let us know the results. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hey Everyone, I promiced to keep you all updated on my progress. Dear Kirsten, My worst setback with anxiety and panic started before I was diagnosed with "Hypothyroidism". I didn`t have the classic symptoms of this disorder, I had the symptoms of hyper. My heart would race all the time, I felt warm and clammy, I couldn`t eat, I was lucky if I slept at all, I was agitated, anxious, panic stricken, depressed,  forgetful, massive brain fog, moody like I had never been in my life, tired yet couldn`t relax, my mind would not shut off. I did bruise terribly and my hair was thinning. Alot of my family and friends saw I was not myself at all and at their urging I went to the doctor. I really thought I was having a severe setback with anxiety. Thank god the doctor did alot of blood work on me, within a few days he diagnosed me with Hypothyroidism. From what he told me, it was quite bad. He also told me that it was probably the reason for most of my mental and physical symptoms. PS- I’m scared. I don’t like hospitls or needles. And what if I do have it then what? It’s treatable but still….help!

kirsten It is very treatable. Both my sister and I have this disorder and are doing fine. You won`t need to go to the hospital to be treated. I am not fond of needles, so I understand your fear, but you need to have blood work done to see if you do have this disorder. If you do have Hypothyroidism, you will be placed on a thyroid replacement hormone, I take Synthroid. You will be started on a low dose, after a few weeks you will go get more bloodwork, depending on the results, you will either have the hormone dose increased, remain the same or decreased. This process is continued until your thyroid tests start coming back normal, or what is called "euthyroid". Once you reach this point, you only need to have bloodwork done once a year or if you feel like you are having hypo symptoms again. {{{{{Kirsten}}}}} Jackie

Hi Kirsten, It is awful to not know things for sure.  After you know one way or another, you will be able to relax a bit more.  Have you got someone who can go with you and help you through it?  Sending you all the very best wishes I can muster!   Take really good care of yourself!
