Re New Panic Attacks

Question:

Thanks for all your help Philip.    ~L.J.~

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thanks everyone for the advice.  Last night things got so bad, that this morning I went to emergency surgery and saw a dr.  He thoroughly checked me out and said that he thinks that I have raynauds syndrome (causing numbness/tingling in hands and feet) which is being exacerbated by AND causing the panic attacks also.  He gave me lustral (sertraline hci) antidepressants, more diazepam (valium) and something for the raynauds disease.  I feel much calmer now (thank god!).  Does anyone know what lustral (sertraline) is and anything about it?  Thanks once again! ~Moll C~ Sertraline = Zoloft, an SSRI-antidepressant often used for anxiety disorders. It has helped many. But it should be weaned on slowly to avoid or minimize initial symptom worsening and other side effects. Ideally Zoloft should be started at 12,5 mgs and after a week raised to 25 mgs etc.etc. until therapeutic dosage is reached. You should given Zoloft about eight weeks to fully kick in. Valium or another benzo can be used *as needed* for breakthrough initial attacks. Zoloft and Valium make a good combo. Philip Hello, i’m new to the group.  I wonder if anyone can help me.  I have been suffering depression and generalized anxiety for some years.  I have had this pretty much under control for the last couple years, but in the last few days I have had several major panic attacks, with severe shaking, nausea, hot flashes, chills and rapid heart beat.  This has come about because in the last week I have been getting numb, tingling fingers and toes.  The worry about these symptoms, which are bad at night in bed has made me have panic attacks.  Does anybody else suffer from numbness and tingling associated with panic attacks, or do you think that this is a separate condition. (I have a doctors appt for next week)  If not, does anyone know any natural remedies which can help with any of these symptoms or any coping strategies, as just thinking about going to sleep makes me really anxious? Thanks,  ~L.J.~ Numbness and tingling are common anxiety symptoms and as a rule are the consequence of *hyperventilation*. Hyperventilation in itself is a symptom of panic disorder. The other symptoms you mention are typical for panic disorder too. Do you have any medication? There are no short-term natural remedies which will take of care of panic symptoms immediately (I wouldn’t, for instance, start Kava Kava before seeing a doctor). Will you see your GP or a pdoc? I hope you are seeing a psychiatrist specialized in anxiety disorders to start medication if you can tough it out till next week. BACH *rescue remedy* is a natural concoction which is harmless and sometimes may bring some relief. Philip

Three cheers for your advice here Phillip.  I was told that Kava Kava was a "godsend"  so I took it without asking anyone.  I became so agitated I could not sleep, my skin burned like there was a fire under it and I could not keep still.  I would be hot and then freezing the next minute.  My husband called the Emergency room and they told me that it was probably an allergic reaction to the drug and that give it an hour and if I did not feel better, I needed to come in. The problem was I had an allergy to it that I never knew about.  It attacked my metabolism and overnight I lost 5 pounds from it.  It is not a regulated drug so the nurse at the emergency room could not tell me much about treatment.  She just said to drink a lot of water to flush it out and never take it again. I’m sticking to the tried and true FDA approved medications from now on that are prescribed. Sharon Dream of never ending harmony

Molly, I suffer just the same way.  Numbness and tingling.   First I have to try to stay calm.    Then I will use my xanax that is prescribed for me.  If you don’t have that or something similar try drinking some tea with kava kava in it.  This will help you calm down some and a warm bath. Always works for me.
