Question:
I have been to two doctors. one said that the panic i described was ‘common amongst young people’ – as if that helped and the second asked me if i wished to see a pshychiatrist – which as you can guess made me feel alot better!
Hi, Paula. I was pissed off when my GP told me years ago to "go see a psychologist" about my panic attacks. I ended up going to another doctor and being put on Elavil, which didn’t seem to help much. The problem is that regular doctors often *don’t* know much about anxiety and panic, or they just don’t know how to treat it. On the other hand, psychiatrists *do,* and given that they’re also M.D.’s who can prescribe the proper meds to you, they are probably more beneficial to you than a regular doctor can be. In the meantime, you can request a complete physical from your regular doc to make sure your problem isn’t a physical one masquerading as an emotional one. Bottom line is, psychiatrists are nothing to be afraid of, and they can be very helpful in cases like ours. Some one in the newsgroup said that cats are good for anxiety…well i have two dogs and a hamster so that option is out however i have found that praying helps!
I believe that it does too. And as for the pets, well, I have a tank full of fish and two dogs–and I don’t think they’ve put me much at ease at all! also there is a homatherapy medicine called ‘rescue remedy’ which you can use! that is quite good however there is one drawback. when you add it to water it smells like alcohol – i.e not good to have at work!
If it works for you, more power to you! —- Adrian

HI Paula, I also have used the Rescue Remedy. I had the tincture and just a few drops on the tongue did the trick for me. Cathy — P.H.O.B.I.A. People Helping Others Become Independent Again Off-line Panic/Anxiety Support Group Learn about us at http://community.nj.com/cc/phobia

: Hello. Hello, : Is it just me or do doctors seem to treat panic attacks like the common : cold! Unfortunately, some doctors are still this way. Gradually, however, the medical community is catching on. : They perscribe pills that "work in the future" and think you’ll be okay! All pills "work in the future," it’s just a question of how far in the future. The fastest acting medication for panic attacks takes about 15 to 30 minutes take affect. The slower medications can take a month or two. : I have been to two doctors. : one said that the panic i described was ‘common amongst young people’ – as : if that helped Panic disorder affects from one to five percent of the population; so describing it as ‘common’ sort of depends on your perspective. : and the second asked me if i wished to see a pshychiatrist – which as you : can guess made me feel alot better! : maybe he said that because i said that I felt i was going nuts because of : the attacks! Actually, psychiatrists deal with medical issues as well as psychological issues, so this wasn’t a bad suggestion. Sometimes panic attacks occur because of a hormone or neurotransmitter problem. : this panic has been going on since Jan and seems to be getting better only : now! Sometimes panic disorder fades away on it’s own, and sometimes it waxes and wanes over months or years. Everyone is different, so it’s hard to tell. : Some one in the newsgroup said that cats are good for anxiety…well i have : two dogs and a hamster so that option is out however i have found that : praying helps! Many people have commented that praying or pets (in general) have helped to some degree. Best Wishes, Arthur
