: Hi, I am new to this group. My name is Leah and I am a 20 year old : college student. I was diagnosed with panic disorder in my senior year of : high school, but I have had the sensations all of my life. My : psychiatrist told me recently that children aren’t treated for the : disorder, and researchers aren’t sure if it occurs in children. Well, I : am sure!! Does anyone else think they experienced panic in childhood? Absolutely! I had them also. But I delt with them in socialy unexceptable behavior episodes and outbursts. Now that I am all grown up, that is not allowed. Though I do allow little episodes of childish diversion. ;-D DRSherwood "Don’t put him down as arrogant, just because his mind is not for rent." Does anyone else think they experienced panic in childhood? I currently take Prozac, and Klonopin if I hav an attack (which, thank goodness, is rarely). Brooke, I am interested in your question about the roots of panic because my family is indeed dysfunctional. After years of warfare my parents are finally separating, and I find that my panic attacks tend to be around their crises. Best to all of you, Leah
I’m certain my first panic came when I was a child. The thing about the family doesn’t fit me. My family is close, and my parents were niether to strict or to laxed with us. Our punishment was no TV or a time out in our bedroom. I had a grandfather who I thought was ill with a medical condition, forget what it was now, but in reality was agoraphobia with panic. Sean

Leah – be thankful that you were diagnosed at ALL. I went through most of my young life with the anxiety problem, and nobody ever actually figured it out/told me what it was until I was in my late 20’s. It messed me up in grade school. High school wasn’t bad, for whatever reason. It messed me up in college. What was probably the WORST was not knowing what was eating at me for all those years…. : high school, but I have had the sensations all of my life. Yes. I might add, there seem to be many things that "children don’t have" that they really *DO* have. Only recently does the medical profession seem to be waking up to that notion…. Absolutely! I had them also. But I delt with them in socialy unexceptable behavior episodes and outbursts. Now that I am all grown up, that is not allowed.
If only because there is so much dis-information and mis- information about these kinds of disorders……maybe. Though I do allow little episodes of childish diversion. ;-D
I know you had a smiley-face there, but actually I think it is good for us to NOT completely get rid of the child in each of us. That doesn’t mean acting like one all the time (although looking at some people who wouldn’t know they *weren’t*) but recognizing that some diversion and simple recreation without adult complications might actually be *good* for us….. That isn’t just my theory, but comes from the counselor I saw for quite some time. Duane
