Question:
Hi. I was wondering if this group is just for panic disorder, or is it also for general anxiety? I can’t seem to find a ng for general anxiety.

Dear Sasha, Welcome to ASAP!! This newsgroup is for "all" anxiety disorders, so you`ve come to the right place. We have quite a few posters here who also have GAD. This newsgroup is a great place to get support, empathy and some great advice. If you feel comfortable, why don`t you tell us a little about yourself. Take care

OK. My main diagnosis is schizoaffective, which in my case means I have Bipolar ll (major depression + hypomania) and mild schizophrenia. The medications I’m on completely get rid of the schizo symptoms, and make the mood symptoms not as bad, but I have found that what I’m left with is a great deal of anxiety. I’m going for a record number of mental illnesses I think. I think I have GAD, and maybe some social phobia thrown in too. I have had panic attacks about 2 & 1/2 years ago, but I think it was a side effect of welbutrin I was taking for depression, and zoloft was added to take care of it, but I’m on different meds now. In fact, I was just prescribed Buspar for anxiety. I’m still waiting for it to work, it takes like 2 – 4 weeks and I’ve had it for 2 days. Anyone else taking that? My pdoc wouldn’t give me benzos because of risk of addiction (I’ve been known to use alcohol to ease anxiety at times) and I won’t take SSRI’s anymore because of the sexual side effects which was a strain on my marriage. So that leaves Buspar. Is it any good? Sasha – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Jackie Acting like a witch…..Eating 14 chocolate bars…..this isn`t a holiday for

Hi Sasha, Buspar can be an effective med for Generalized anxiety disorder, we have a few posters doing well on it. Have you ever tried cognitive behavioral therapy for your anxiety? That combined with meds can really make a difference. Take care and good luck with the Buspar. Jackie Acting like a witch…..Eating 14 chocolate bars…..this isn`t a holiday for

I’m in therapy, but not that kind. I’ve tried using it with only a little knowledge about it, and it didn’t seem to work. I seem to have a bad response before I have a chance to think of anything, so there is no time to intervene. Maybe I should get a therapist who really knows a lot about it to teach it to me right. That combined with meds can really make a difference. Take care and good luck with the Buspar.

Hey Sasha, I have BPD. I was diagnosed with it about a month ago. I suffer from anxiety, depression, panic, and when it gets bad enough, destructive thoughts (cutting myself). I have been like this for years (I’m 38), but finally found out *what* "it" was last month when I saw a psychiatrist. By luck (or by God), his partner specializes in dealing with BPD patients. I just can’t tell you how important she (the therapist) has become to me. I have a very long road ahead of me, but knowing I have someone who is "on call" for ME when I need it, makes all the difference in the world. My husband is my rock, but it has been tough on him because he didn’t know what I was doing, or why. Now that we have an explanation, and I have direction… well, it’s just been a relief. Welcome to ASAP…. I’m new here too. I’ve lurked a lot more than I’ve posted, but I can already tell you the people in here are wonderful! — SkyBlue Courage doesn’t always roar. Hey Sasha, I have BPD.
Do you mean Bipolar Disorder, or Borderline Personality Disorder, I’ve seen them both as BPD, and it’s kind of confusing. I was diagnosed with it about a month ago. I suffer from anxiety, depression, panic, and when it gets bad enough, destructive thoughts (cutting myself).
I self injure too. I guess I can add that to my list. But I’m a hitter, as well as stabbing myself with blunt objects, or just something kind of pointy. I’m impulsive type, so it doesn’t happen often, but I still have a bruise from 3 weeks ago. It happens mostly when the anxiety irritability builds to the point of agitation and I just lose it. I become intensely angry and fearful and SI makes it go away. My therapist says it is because I was not allowed to express anger as a child and was punished for it, and so I’m doing the same to myself. I’ve heard that SI comes from intense anxiety and my therapist said Buspar was on the list for SI too, so maybe it will kill two birds with one stone. I have been like this for years (I’m 38), but finally found out *what* "it" was last month when I saw a psychiatrist. By luck (or by God), his partner specializes in dealing with BPD patients. Thanks. I didn’t bother lurking much, just jumped on in. Don’t have any social phobia problems on the net. I just needed to talk about my anxiety, and the folks on the Bipolar ng don’t want to talk to me about it. I’m spread out on 3 ngs now with all my problems. At least none of them are really severe, but they do add up to me being somewhat of a mess. Sasha – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – — SkyBlue Courage doesn’t always roar. organised. I have a strict schedule for every day with things scheduled down to the minute, but if anything interrupts my schedule, I freak out. I really feel the opposite I did before.
Sasha, Work on balancing the structure. Too much structure can be as bad or worse than no structure at all. It’s really difficult when you’re a person of "extremes" but it will help immensely. -get a good cbt therapist to help you I really like the therapist I have now, I feel so open to her and can tell her everything, but I’m not sure if she is really helping me. I probably could use cbt. The reason it didn’t work before might have been because my thinking was too disorganised, but now that I am taking ap’s, it might actually work.
This is the time to do it! The same thing is going on with me. Suddenly I’m ready, and able thanks to some new meds. Do it now while you can grasp it, and things will be easier later. I’m not in cbt, but I’m doing dbt and it’s doing absolute wonders for me. And the improvements were FAST. I’m hanging onto my new skills for dear life, because they’re working! The structure of a "class setting" helps a *lot*. I’m much more motivated this way then when I was trying to do things alone. Just my 2 cents. — Roo

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was wondering if benzos are better than Buspar. I wonder because they seem to be more widely prescribed, even with this addiction concern. My pdoc just doesn’t want to prescribe them for me. Maybe he is afraid I will drink while I’m taking the benzos, which is contraindicated, but I think I won’t need to drink if I take them. I guess I’ll wait and see how the Buspar works. I’m not even an alcoholic, I have two drinks to ease the anxiety 3 to 4 days a week. Occasionally I will have three, but I don’t get drunk. Ok, there have been a few times at parties where I had so much social anxiety that I did get drunk, but I go to a party like twice a year. Does that sound like an alcoholic? Sometimes I worry that I might be, but according to some tests I’m not. Don’t alcoholics get drunk every day? Sasha You are most certainly *not* an alcoholic by any stretch of the
imagination. Thanks for the reassurance. No one at all in my family ever drinks, and my husband just has one beer every once in a long while, so in comparison it seems like I drink a lot. It is nothing to what some people I knew back in college drank though. If I were you I
