Question:
Just recently started visiting here and find it very informative. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with Buspar, and if you experienced any side effects with it . I just started takeing it with Zoloft and it makes me feel like I’m in a cloud. I know its not the Zoloft because I have been takeing it for 4 months. Thanks in advance for your response. Vanilla
Response:
I was prescibed Buspar two years ago, I packed it in after two weeks as it made me feel worse and give me strange twanging noises in the head. Must work for some though, although in my personal experience benzo-diazapam drugs are so much more effective in panic situations. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Just recently started visiting here and find it very informative. What is your diagnosis? If it’s Panic Disorder you’d better skip the Buspar because it very rarely works for PD. If you’re diagnosed with GAD you’d best consult your doctor. Maybe a benzo would be better although they can be sedating. Philip

Hi, Vanilla. Welcome. I took Buspar for 3 months or so in 1996 along with a succession of antidepressants (Serzone, then briefly Effexor, then Wellbutrin). I did not get anything out of it, but the only side effect it had was dizziness which went away after a little while. I didn’t go very high on the dosage, though: I think I only went up to 30mg. If you find that you’re not getting anywhere on the standard doses they give to people with anxiety, it might be worthwhile to go up as high as 60mg. (There have been studies using up to 90mg for depression, and it’s safe and well tolerated even at that very high dose.) As with any antidepressant (Buspar is marketed for anxiety but it’s more like an antidepressant – not a "tranquilizer"), increase the dose slowly. As Philip mentioned, it’s not for panic disorder, and if you’re currently having spontaneous panic attacks it won’t do anything for them. It might help with panic attacks due to other anxiety disorders (such as OCD), especially when added to the Zoloft. I get the impression it’s very much a "hit or miss" thing: it works wonders for some people, for others it does nothing at all. I do think that perhaps they often need to use higher doses than are commonly prescribed, though. Is the Zoloft helping you, BTW? Good luck – keep posting, and let us know how it goes. -elizabeth

I just wanted to mention something about buspar. A friend of mine takes it (for hyperactivity), and it works great for him. On the insert, however, it says that it decreases available serotonin, which decreases anxiety. Now, with the SSRI’s, I’ve read that they increase available serotonin, which decreases anxiety and depression. I’ve always found this confusing. Anyone heard of this. Also, why would you take a med that would counteract another med??? Does this make sense? BTW, I’m headed toward week 4 of paxil, and I started having these hand tremors from it. Has anyone had this before, and does it go away? Bye, Maria
