New Dr., new drug

Question:

Hi Gary,  I know this is only the second day of this  new med, but I already know 2 things about it.  One is that I sleep alot (14 hrs. last nite), and Two, I have that "wonderful" drug hangover feeling.  OK. the Dr. told me if I felt sleepy taking the 5mg. to half the pill — which I will do.  She said nothing about the hangover effect, so I’m hoping that taking less will help that as well.  And I will go searching the web again.  Most of what I had found was things on the FDA and Canada approving the drug. Thanks, dearie.                  Wendee If reality wants to get in touch with me, it knows where I am…

She seems alright, just doesn’t seem to have a sense of humor.  I don’t know if I can handle that.  Anyway I’m on a new med called Zyprexa.  Anybody heard of it?  It’s called an "atypical antipsychotic" in the booklet she gave me, and is supposed to be good for panic attacks. There doesn’t seem to be much on the web about it. I can’t decide on a good defination for "atypical antipsychotic", and since it was designed for schizophrenia, does that mean that one of me was OK, while the other of me wasn’t?  Is  ’specialist’ was just a good way to charge people a lot of money every visit?   I’ve *heard* of Zyprexa, Wendee, but know nothing about it. I can tell you that it has been mentioned on this NG in the past though, so a trawl through Deja News might reveal a snippet. I confess, the label ‘anti-psychotic’ would offend me, too, but that’s probably just this lay-person’s prejudice. Hope this specialist does you some good. Please let us know how you get on, won’t you? — Gary Cooper

Zyprexa is an antipsychotic.  I haven’t heard or read of anyone using it for panic disorder.  Psychotics have anxiety spells — maybe thats what the instructions were referring to.  Antipsychotic is not a "lay persons prejudice" but common sense.  Its a medicine for psychosis. The prescribing psychiatrist undoubtably is treating psychosis.  Either Wendee or her doctor doesn’t understand the diagnosis.  My opinion. Dr. S.
