Response:

i understand your plythe.  i am going through anxieties and panic attacks as well.  I am home bound now with agoraphobia associated with Panic disorder, i cannot drive either without having a person that understands my anxieties riding with me.  i have had these for about 10 years, but because i left it untreated it got worse to where i have trouble leaving my house and going around the corner whether walking or driving (with someone).  I feel i fight everday not to have an attack or to think about them…I take St. John’s Wort, even though i have always been skeptical of taking medications or any pills (even vitamins).  But i make myselft take it every evening, when my mate is home, it makes me feel safer.  I have seperation anxiety of being alone and not having anyone around.  I see a psychotherapist that says it stems back to my childhood, of being a latchkey kid for most of my teenage years and earlier years.  I am trying to deal the best way i know how, and that is what you do, do what you have to go get through the day, as sane and alert as possible.  I have been strongly considering medication because the herbal pills don’t seem to keep the edge off, good enough.  I am starting a new program through my local Mental health department.  If you are in need of helpt they can help you, with or without insurance, they offer counseling, group therapy and medications, look in your yellow pages for the help…it’s there.  I hope this helped!

I started anxiety attacks really bad 7 months ago and me too avoid driving.  I even sometimes hate to be alone thinking something bad is going to happen.  I am told that this is a very common problem and will eventually go away with some therapy. I am still seeking theray and came to conclude that only I can make this dreaded feeling go away. YOUR NOT ALONE!! Feel free to email me anytime.

It’s true that only *tou* can make your anxiety go away. But that doesn’t exclude the notion of therapy. Therapy is *not* something someone else (the therapist( does of which you are the receiver. It’s something *you* do. You use therapy as a tool and it’s hard work too. Especially where anxiety disorders are concerned where the preferred therapy is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which is a her-and-now no-nonsense type of therapy which has you confronting your own fears at your own pace. *You* are, indeed, the only one who is able to do this. Hi Lisa, There are many people on the group who want to help U. What gives U anxiety about food and driving? I would like to say when I was your age things were a lot more difficult. As I got older things started to lesson. So there is hope that things will get better. I understand the driving part as I avoid it as much as possible myself. Im always worried about something going wrong. It is important to try to drive some if at all possible. Just around the corner is good enough. It keeps U from totally freezing up on a subject on the car subject. Without knowing more it is impossible to say more. Feel free to e-mail. Good luck J

Find yourself a good doctor who knows about anxiety disorders and knows how to treat them properly. Educate yourself and use that knowledge to help with your own treatment. That is the very best advice I can give you from 23 years of experience with PD and a lifetime of GAD. The faster you get help, the easier this disorder is to get under control. The longer you wait, the more likely you are to develop phobias that are extremely resistant to treatment. Your avoidance of driving is just the start if you don’t seek medical help. Please, for your own sake, if "therapy" (as in talk therapy) does not work within a month or two, see someone who is an MD or is very experienced in dealing with ADs. Regards, Jen
